I have a fiber router that was provided by my ISP (Converge). It has a USB port that can be used for NAS, I've gotten it to work inside the network but I don't know how to allow access from outside (via the internet). Please help

Thanks in advance!

Do you want the entire world to potentially have access to your internal LAN?
I know I wouldn't.

An FTP server open for universal access is fine, if it is sufficiently walled off...

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I don't use a dedicated NAS device, I just plug in the external hard drive directly into the router. It works inside the network, but I want it to work from outside the network as well...

What does it say in the user manual?

Be very careful when doing this. If you can access it from outside, maybe someone else can as well.

According to the manual, I can set accounts (with passwords) with different levels of access (some can only access some folders, other accounts can access all, etc.). Right now, all i plan to do with the NAS is place my movies and series there so i can access it on all my devices without have to copy paste to every single one.

Access within your LAN is fine.
Opening ports for access from outside you LAN....potential issue.

How so? If you know how use google properly, you can search for FTP servers and most do not have a password...

That's what you have to be careful with.

Would you want someone to replace one of your files with something malicious?

Oh, I get it now, I thought that a NAS and FTP were the same things and the terms were interchangeable...

Thanks for bearing with me and for your time!

And that's what I mean about being very, very careful.

If you don't know what you're doing, you're simply opening up your entire network to the outside world.
All your passwords, user accounts, banking info, etc, etc, etc.
Everything you do on your PC.

NAS = Network Attached Storage.
FTP (server) = File Transfer Protocol server.

An FTP server with no password and upload access enabled is simply a magnet for all the idiots around the world to use and abuse your network. And they will, just because they can.

There are far more ways to do it wrong, than the one way to do it right.
