i was looking at the qnap ts-451+ but see a lot of posts about building my own system. What are your thoughts on this. Which would you recommend. I am not an expert by any means but I also would like to use this system for with a self build NVR.

Hard drives I was thinking WD RED PRO.

Thank for you thoughts.

Going with commercial NAS is a no-brainer: You buy it, populate with disks, power it up, configure it.
With DIY - you need not-so-beefy (but not 20th century either) computer, empty drive slots, and lot of reading / tinkering. You will also need a place where to put it (because it'll be noisy), and little bit higher power bill if you keep it 24/7.

As for NVR - check your software first. It it is going to run on the server, it should be spported by your NAS.

I have the TS-453A.
Why do I have that? Because I got tired of rolling my own house server box.
This thing 'just works'.

Quiet, low power consumption, stable....
