I have nas server Medion life P89631 with 3tb. storage. the firmware sucks, I can't access it half the time and i would like to use freenas instead but i just don't know how to go about exchanging the firmware. I'm hoping someone can help me :??:

Solution

I doubt it. You would have to find out what processor your NAS has. There MIGHT be a linux or android distro you could load but your best bet is to save your pennies and buy/build a replacement.
The hardware requirements for FreeNAS are fairly high (8GB RAM)... I don't believe your NAS appliance can be converted to FreeNAS. The best you could do is build a server, install FreeNAS, remove the disk from the NAS appliance and hope it can be read by your FreeNAS host.

I have been unable to find out how much ram is present in the nas it doesn't say in the instruction book - is there another software I can use or can I open the nas and put more ram in

I think you are right
The only thing I could find on the Medion Nas was that it had a dual core processor. Does it use some of the harddrive as ram maybe?
do you have any links with build intro?

I couldn't even find much info in English.... Can't help you too much.

My recommendation is to look into one of the "big three" home NAS vendors. Either Qnap, Thecus or Synology. They all have a range of products for a range of budgets. They all have BYOD (bring your own disk(s) ) versions. Look at their web pages. They have demos of their user interface that you can play with online before you buy. The software suite is just as important as the hardware when it comes to NAS, in my opinion. The "big three" use the same software suite across their entire line so if you can only afford a 1 disk version today but upgrade in the future to a 4 disk unit, the software suite is the same.
