I can't find a NAS solution online that doesn't involve buying some device or building a PC dedicated for a NAS. Currently my system has 4 drives. 1 is for windows, 1 is for linix and the others are back up drives. Is there any way to have those 2 drives be in the same system and act as a NAS? It would be nice to just throw files in there without having to use google drive. Any solutions someone can link me to?

You also have to manage "Password protected sharing"
Assuming Windows 10:
Network and Sharing Center
Change Advanced Sharing settings
All Networks
Select 'Turn off password protected sharing'

Sure you can use the two other drives as simple storage.
A NAS implies that you want to connect to them from other systems?
Network Attached Storage.

What are you actually wanting to do?

Just "throw files in there"?

Do you mean files from the Windows and Linix drives or files from other systems on your network?

Either way you would need to map and share the target "throw in" disks to make them available via the various OS's to be using the drives.

I want to be able to move files from my laptop to the back up drives on my computer without hooking anything up physically.

Edit. I will only be using it for photos and windows documents. I don't plan on using my linux drive at all.

Easy.

2 systems, the desktop with 4 drives, and the laptop.
Both connected to the same router?
Shared Folders on the 2 drives in the desktop.
File and Print sharing needs to be turned on.
Then, from the laptop, you should be able to 'see' whatever folders you have shared.
In the laptop File Explorer, connect. Map a drive letter. Maybe the S drive letter ("shared") or N drive letter ("NAS")
From then on the laptop...simply copy stuff to that drive letter.
Poof...it automagically saves on that drive/folder in the desktop.

Of course, both systems must be up and running .

I have no idea how to do that.
This is what I've tried.
Right click back up drive, properties, sharing, advanced sharing, permissions everyone full control, apply.
On the laptop I go into network and see desktop-###### and try to click that. It asks for a password and I can't get it to work even with the homegroup password windows gives me.
