I've all these different external hard drives of various manufacturers and various sizes.
I was wondering if there is a cool way to use the internal hard drives of those and have it in one NAS enclosure.
Now wouldn't that be so cool?
Is this possible?

Many thanks!

thanks! I do not have that kind of router 🙁

looked up gnap, synology.. they're so expensive!!

yes I was looking for a simple way to consolidate my various external drives to one unit.. and I thought if it also has a NAS... great!

what I actually need is a data store...
Most external HDD's do infact use a fullsized HDD, you could simply open the case and extract the HDD and install them into your NAS.

Simple as that, so long as you are running a raid that supports various sized HDD's.

Hmm.. I'm assuming that this kind of NAS that have multiple bays to take different sized HDD's would be expensive right?

Since at this time I really don't care for redundancy, any change to getting an inexpensive hack to connect these various HDD and serve via FreeNAS?

While researching for such a NAS enclosure... found this Rosewill RSV-S5 .... any idea how it it? thanks

i just connect mine to my routers usb port... * poof* instant nas.

as for the rosewill, its not a nas. Its an expansion box that connects to an existing sata/esata port and its only ok for the price and only if your current sata ports support port multiplication. If you have to go buy a new card too you're better off just buying an internal drive in the size you want.

If you want a nas box, look at qnap or synology or maybe a cheap windows home server box.

what I actually need is a data store for the htpc recording -- htpc connected to this rosewill (or such device) -- do you think that rosewill will work in that scenario? thnx
