NAS without RAID

I just want a network accessible box for hot swapable drive storage and have the ability for storage of separate logical volumes. Is this possible with JBOD in any NAS unit out there. I do not want RAID. Please don't talk to me about RAID. I want access via multiple desktop machines, mac and pc and possible on the web. Basically everything a NAS box will do without RAID.

I haven't seen any NAS that doesn't support JBOD.

Ah dude, but RAID is the RAGE. Even people who don't know what RAID is want RAID! 😀 ^What he says. And you are paying for the features even if you don't need it.

separate logical volumes...I have not seen any(in descriptions) that will support separate logical volumes.

I have a Thecus N5550 and I just want to use the box for storage and have the ability to use for storage of separate logical volumes.
Should I go with just a DIY home server?

Have you tried? I used to have a similar model and I'm pretty sure it had the ability to JBOD.

I have read that it will do JBOD only as one volume.

Have you tried? I seem to remember 'spanned' (all one volume) and 'JBOD' (separate volumes) being separate options.
