Hi,

I just installed some very interesting mapping software from NASA. I'm
still figuring out how to use it, so I can't say much more than I
think it's pretty cool.

It is a 180 MB download, so a broadband connection helps. If anyone
on a dial-up connection can't deal with it, I'll be happy to burn the
installation file on a CD and send it to you. Here's where you can
find it:

Ya know I have downloladed this twice now and could never figure out how to
use it. I could never "Zoom" in

Here's one that does work

However you gotta pay. You only get like a 30 day trial, AND the satelite
images are about two years old. But go ahead and do the 30 day deal, its
actuall pretty interesting

Yes, I tried that one, and it was pretty good...and expensive! 🙂

Since I've experienced the zoom problem (beyond 10,000 meters) with
the NASA program, I've been visiting the technical help forum, and
apparently, there's a problem with the terraserver server, so that
the most detailed images are not loading properly. It's in the bug
tracker, and hopefully, there will be a fix for it sometime soon.
Here's the latest on this problem:

http://issues.worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/browse/META-1

I hope they can fix it, because this could be a very nice program if
it's working properly.

Yeah, when NASA's WorldWind does work it is pretty cool. They have
available a couple of "zoomed in" areas that you can *manually* download and
install on your hard drive. This allows you to experience the zoomed in
feature, albeit for a limited area, if you have enough hard drive space.

I installed worldwind. I like it. If you read the download info at the
start they stated there is a problem with a server. That it will be
fixed. I will wait for the fix and see how the whole thing works.

So.. is the consensus to install? or to hold off? Have the 182MB
install downloaded. It requires .Net which is currently not in place.
EditVoicePak also requires .Net - so that's fine.

Hey! It's working now! It's very, very nice, and it's a lot cheaper
than Keyhole! 🙂

My house is in this shot (I'm not going to get too specific):

I also Looked at Seattle using the "Urban Areas" layer, and it's very
amazing! I could even see my friend's kayak shop and their little
docks!

I have had to uninstall both Keyhole and WorldWind because I could not work
them and neither seemed to do what was promised. I am disappointed, because
I think this is what computers are for.

Cheers,

Quilly

http://www.terraserver-usa.com/default.aspx Working link, almost. I
tried to look at Washington Coast and got some bad pictures, missing parts.

I went to your link and and the link there read wrong.

Notice the n instead of w in address. As for keyhole they were bought
out by google and are connected to http://maps.google.com/ Once at this
site and you have your map in the upper corner is a link to sat. image.

Denis, there you are. Didn't you have some instructions on your web page
explaining how to put a movie together using FRAPPS or some such? Your
web site has changed and if the instructions are there I overlooked them
somehow.

I first found out about NASA World Wind about 6 months ago and had good fun
playing around with it for a while, really must get it installed again. But
even then there were server problems and hiccups, you might wait for a long
time for it to be perfected and you might wait forever? Its free to try, so
go for it.

You will need to brush up on the forums Lawn dart mentioned for best
results.

What I did find was the sat images over Northern America were in most cases
very detailed (once you found out how to zoom in) but the Sat images of
Europe and other parts would only zoom in to low resolution blurs.
Apparently This was going to get upgraded, so I'll probably check this again
soon.

I had a lot of fun searching for famous landmarks in USA and zooming in
though, needless to say, Area 51 was a no go.

I'm sure every terrorist has a copy of it. 🙂
