Nasty problems with GTA:SA - anybody else?

Hello!

Just received a UK version of GTA San Andreas.
Everything went smooth until I played a 'drive-by'
mission (CJ is driving and his 3 friends are armed
with fire arms).
In the 2nd or 3rd try to solve that mission I couldn't
hear sound effect anymore, the radio was still working,
but no car sound, no gun sounds, etc.
Later the game froze with a black screen when I
1st tried to this 'hopping-cars' challenge (aftering
select how much money to 'wage' ?).
Since then things went really bad.
Blue screens without any text and pressing the power
button immediately turns of the machine (not after
3 seconds as usual). They happen in cutscenes and
when playing.
Black screen after the 2nd Rockstar logo( pressing
space helps).
Black screens when the picture (and sound) are changed
to show different views or locations.
Or only the name of the next mission is printed and than it
freezes again.

I tried all the other games and benchmarks I have installed
currently to see if it is a general problem - it isn't !
Reinstalling didn't help.
Disconnecting all USB game controllers
(not used with GTA:SA anyway) didn't help.
Upgrading ATI drivers to new 5.6 release didn't help.
Because of the sound problems I though it is a problem
of my external USB 2.0 sound box (C-Media chipset) or the
fact that I have enabled the internal (C-Media onboard sound) and
external sound card the same time.
Disconnecting the USB sound didn't work too.

The last time I rebooted I disabled the onboard sound
and reconnected USB sound and got a message from scandisk
that one of the new 'save game' files (started
with a new game after reinstalling) is broken.
So I removed my user files and started again.
This times is works and I'm more or less back at the settings
I used before.

I really would like to pin down the real problem but I can't.
It worked fine for a few hours before the first problems and crash.
It didn' work after starting with a 'fresh' installation.
Now it seems to work again (starting from scratch) but that
I disabled the onboard sound cannot be the only reason, it worked
before ...

Erik

PS: I think I will try to reinstall the backup of my old user files,
let's see what happens ...

The sound problem is a bug. It appears to happen at random times. Hopefully
it will be patched soon. I'm not sure on the rest.

Yeah, the sound problem is a well-documented bug. Happens to LOTS of people.

The black screen thing seems normal to me too, sadly. I've read of many
people having that problem and I have it too. I have a radeon 9800 pro and I
read that the black screen problem is mainly with ATI users, but not sure.
