We're already on the verge of Kessler syndrome from private companies launching a bunch of smaller satellites willy-nilly.
We don't fully understand the effects of aluminum particles in the atmosphere when old ones are destroyed by burning it in re-entry.

Here is some actual information about Kessler syndrome for people to read.
I wonder how much of the problem is due to satellites in a retrograde orbit. Satellites in a polar or high-inclination prograde orbit are probably almost as bad, but if you could at least eliminate retrograde orbits, then you wouldn't have head-on collisions. I gather retrograde orbits aren't that common, primarily for economic reasons (i.e. it requires more fuel to counter the Earth's rotation).

Remember when NATO was in Western Germany only and said they would not progress past that toward Russia with the 91 treaty if Russia got rid of the Soviet Union? Yeah those were good times.

Opposing-orbit object collisions would, be a BEST case scenario: the resulting debris would have an overall lower velocity and re-entry very rapidly.

In reality, all collisions this far (deliberate or accidental) have been glancing (similar orbit different inclination, or orbit-to-suborbital), so debris has remained close to its original velocity and thus close to its original orbit. The smaller the difference in velocity between the two objects, the longer the resultant debris cloud will take to re-enter.
