Hi,

i noticed that there are two types of NB heatsinks/fans denping on revision. One is flat and the other is "funnel" shaped. Is there a noise-/coolingdifference to result in the change?

I don't know what you're talking about exactly, but last summer there where two versions for those boards: The old style (I believe it looked like a mini orb) and the new style (I believe it looked like a standard mini CPU cooler).

The old style would wear the bearings out quickly and make noise, so they replaced it. It's no longer used on any revision of the boards to the best of my knowledge, because it's a warranty problem.

that was exactly it.. orb - even 😉

hm.. I´ve come across boards where people were whining about their brand new board´s NBfan was broken. So I guess you point about poor design comes into play here.

IS7-G i got in late july had the flat design, the IS7 I got last month had the orb, and hopefully the IC7-G I get monday will have flat too. I was only able to fit my videocard due to it´s heatsink have the same "lines" in the heatsink as the orb´s fins :)

The orb looked cooler though.. guess you can´t have it all

Abit has always given me excellent RMA service, so releasing a board with a poorly designed cooler bearing would cost them a lot of money! I was under the impression, talking to other buyers, that the original cooler design was no longer used on anything, but they might have had some old stock, or they might have had a modification done to the fan, or they might have had an oversight, or...

I´ve seen quite a few.. only one of four had the new hs/fan, but I will just have to wait tomorrow to see.. :)

Yes, i bet they did something to it.. i never had any problems whatsoever, apart from killing two boards of course 😀

thanx for your help Crash!

It arrived, it also has the orb. who was talking statistics?! 😛

I was reading a review of the Max III board, and it had no serial/parallel ports as it featured some special cooling sollution to the transistors near the processorsocket http://www.tweakzone.nl/f/u/1251.jpg, I kinda raised a brow - but was thinking weither this was an issue to address (Prescott anyone?), or just the typical "buy me; I look cool"-case?

I don´t know that much about transistors, or even their preferred environment operation, they could be pumping away happily at 150c for all I know :)

Buy me, look cool, and forget about that old laser printer you use for large print jobs.
