NEC 3500A DVD writer okay for games?

I put this drive in a few weeks ago and it burns DVDs great. Yesterday,
however, I started replaying Command & Conquer Red Alert 2 (a game that's at
least 4-5 years old), and sometimes the game freezes slightly (and I can
hear the DVD drive working hard during these freezes). This never happened
on my 48X Lite-On CD-RW that I replaced with the 3500A.

I think both drives have the same read speed (and I'm using the latest
firmware). Has anyone heard anything about this drive (or DVD writers in
general) being inferior for games?

Some optical drives can be picky about some disks. Your game CD
may have enough scratches, etc. to not work properly. Have you
tried other game CDs?
