NEC FE2111SB - not totally flat?

Hi,

I just got an FE2111SB and it doesn't look like the screen is
horizontally flat - it appears to bend at the edges like a normal CRT.
The glass in front of the screen is flat, but not the screen itself.

I just want to make sure it's supposed to look like this, so am hoping
someone else here who has one can tell me if they see the same thing.

What you describe is normal for shadow mask tubes but an aperature
grille tube should be pretty well flat even in the corners. I had an
FE1250 and it was flat. LCD's are probably the only true flat screen
you can get though.

Much like the Viewsonic A90f+ I used to have. It was advertised as a
flat screen, but the actual CRT was slightly curved. Only the
protective glass in front of the CRT was flat.

Hmm, so what are the good 21+ inch flat CRTs these days? I just came
off using a 21" KDS Avitron for a few years that was totally flat, so
that's what I'm used to. Not sure if the curvature of the FE2111SB is
going to bother me long term or not.

We have an FE2111SB here, and I detect no curvature. It uses the same
Diamontron tube as this FP2141SB I'm looking at now and it's perfectly flat
as well...

I don't know; I just bought a 20.1" LCD display.

Yeah, if they weren't all 1600X1200 I'd have one too.

If DiamondTron and ViewSonic tubes are slightly curved, and Sony is
out of the monitor business (Trinitons always seemed flat to me), I
don't know where to turn next.

Ditto. I have a Mits Diamond Pro 2070SB 22" CRT and if there's curvature I
sure can't detect it. If so it must be really slight and as such I would
think you'd get used to it.

These things are really subjective and staring at a CRT for months/years
will alter your perception. I was trying to be nice by upgrading a
coworkers monitor. They had an invar shadow mask (older) CRT and I swapped
it out for a perfectly flat Sony CRT.

After a few days they came to complain and get their old monitor back b/c it
was flat (in their perception) and this new Sony actually curved toward them
at the corners.

Diamondtron are just as flat as Trinitron.

I used to have some of the original flat screen Zeniths. Until you got used
to them the screens looked concave. Put a ruler on them though and they
were truly flat.

Nice monitors--among the few at the time that were viewable in direct
sunlight. Shame Zenith never bothered to develop decent electronics to
support the tube--given the choice between paying a premium for 640x480 on
a flat screen or paying less for 1024x768 on a curved one the market went
with curved.

I don't know what to think at this point. There's a definite
horizontal curve to this DiamondTron that I just bought - a curve that
is not present on the Trinitron tube I've been using for the last few
years.

Get a 19" at 1280x1024, then.

My Mitsu 930SB CRT is flat, as far as I can tell, anyway.
