NEC Monitor whines

I bought a 19" NEC CRT monitor several years ago. It works great and the image is clear. However about 18 months ago it started squealing, a high pitched whine that sometimes starts as soon as it comes up, other times it will not start for several minutes. Has anyone heard of or experienced this problem before?
The only oddity that I found with this is when my laptop screen died I plugged the monitor in to the VGA port on it and the whine never happened. However it does whine on any other desktop box I have. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Its like nails on a chalkboard...

I have a friend with the same problem. No solution, just the same problem

You might want to try different refresh rates / resolutions and see if any sound differently.
