I'm trying to decide on a 19" monitor for my new gaming system....looking at the NEC 950+, the NEC Multisync FE991SB, and the Sony GS420. Anyone have any input?

I have the nec fe 950+ and love it... save alot over a sony and very good quality. Need to spend some time adjusting the picture as with most new monitors..but I think it has nearly the quality of the Sony but much cheaper. My previous Monitor was a 17 inch Sony which was great also.

Is it me, or do trinitrons have better convergence than the apg NEC offers? I mean mine monitor is absolutely horrible in that aspect, and yes I did get it replaced. First it's like there's a whitish outline to text. Then it's planly visible how there is bad convergence as at 1024x768 I can see the red on text from 3 feet away. Makes me wanna hammer this pos, and it's new too. Honestly, I'm very dissapointed by NEC, I mean I also called up their tech support for a WORKING version of their naviset software, cause the current version doesn't want to work, and they tech there said u'll just have to wait for an update. It's been almost a month, no mention of it. Goddamn ripoff.

What if you had admin rights to life?

Id say get the nec and if you don't like it most places have a 1 month return policy.. but check this out first of course...you are likely to have a very good monitor although there are bad apples occassionally in all brands. You could save yourself major mula.

I'd get the mitusubishi line of nec-mitsubishi monitors. They ostensibly have better electronics than the nec, though they have identical tubes.

Sony's are good too, though in my experience I've noticed bad geometry and ghosting. However, I never bought a top of the line sony (ie gdm series as they are pricey), whereas I did buy a top of the line mitsubishi.

good luck.

Quality is better than name brand, even regarding beloved AMD.

I own the FE991SB. I also own the 950+. Both are great, although I did get a bad apple with my first 991.

I actually posted this problem here on the board a few times, and ended up replacing the monitor with another.
Everything has been perfect since the last monitor came and I've had no problems.

I know what the other guy is talking about with the redish tone around text, but I don't have that problem anymore at all after I replaced the monitor. Plus, I use adobe gamma for my main adjustments and it works better than the navi-thingie, I'm told. But I dunno.

It's a great monitor.

I think the other guy said it best. Give it a shot. Plop down your funds for one that you want to try. Give it a week or so and if it sucks, just go exchange it for the other one. If it sucks, give one of the ones you likes more another try, but obviously get a new one, cause there are MANY bad apples in the bunches of monitors.

Just my opinion.

Goodluck.

Thanks for all the input guys. I wound up buying the FE991SB and I'm actually pretty happy with it. There is a bit of a whitish outline to text, as was stated above, but I haven't noticed any convergence problems with it. The SuperBright feature is handy for gaming (press a button and the brightness increases 50%). I don't doubt that the Sony is a better monitor, based on opinions here and the reviews I read, but I was unable to find the GS420 in a store anywhere, and I wasn't about to order the thing at a Sony shop without seeing it first.

Compuhan

This was true before the merger, after the merger they are using the same electronics also. The new NEC FP2141SB and the 2070SB are identical except to the logo on the front.

Thanks for that info.

Did they start using the same electronics with this particular model?

Are the electronics NEC or Mitsubishi? I'd guess they chose the superior one, since these two monitors have been making some headlines.

Not certain exactly when however from an economy of scale perspective it would make more sense to start using the same electronics soon after the merger and as soon as they merged the assembly into the same factories.

These days it is difficult to tell who is doing the designing and manufacturing. Even the big brand names use third party factories for many of their brand name products. I have inspected factories in China, Japan, Taiwan, Philippians, Thailand and Mexico, you would be surprised to see what brand names are coming off the same assembly lines. IMHO the logo on the front has little to do with the actual quality of the product behind it.

Just a note. We all know we should go for Sony brand. If your choosing between an FE991 or FP912 vs a Sony CPD-420s or CPD-410R go to Dell.com

I bought mine today. I got a Sony CPD-410R for 290, shipping is free! 290 is all I spent when it costs 399 at Sony.com. It's like Dell is selling the monitors they have for pricewatch.com prices and better yet free shipping so they beat pricewatch.com total prices.

Hurry, free shipping is a limited time only. If you have enough cash I suggest you get the CPD-420S for only $358. uh-oh they just increased prices. The once $290 for CPD-410R is now $308!

>>I have inspected factories in China, Japan, Taiwan, Philippians, Thailand and Mexico, you would be surprised to see what brand names are coming off the same assembly lines.

I'm not certain what you mean here. Are you saying because the same brands are manufactured in so many different places and especially third party factories (some locations perceived as sub-par, such as Taiwan) the logo is less an indicator of quality that is the assembly locale?

Well, if the assembly location is related to quality in the publicaly perceived way, then I'm glad my mitsu was actually made in japan.

I just checked my sony cpd e-200. It's made in Mexico!

No what I’m saying is that even though it has a brand name logo and it was made in a certain country, does not necessarily mean it was designed or manufactured by the company who’s logo is on the front. BTW labor rates are higher in Japan then they are in the U.S. this is one reason your monitor cost more than a comparable unit manufactured elsewhere. Bottom line, IMHO brand names do not always indicate better quality.

Don’t get me wrong the 2060 is a good monitor, you made a good choice, however there are products out there that are comparable and cheaper in price.
