Necessary programs for gaming pc

I wouldn't call any program 'necessary' for a gaming PC. The hardware is key, there isn't a program that will increase performance unless it's overclocking software. But I would say a windows based PC is key as your going to get the most support for PC games on windows as opposed to mac or linux. There are a lot of nice programs to have for monitoring performance though. I like to use CPUz, GPUz, fraps, windows performance monitor to make sure everything is running fine.

well, i wouldnt say its that simple..for todays gaming you need a 64bit operating system, windows 7 or above ideally. the new game witcher 3 requires it. i bekieve gta5 does also. and winzip or z7 7z? for opening compressed files. steam oftem downloades compressed files. directx 10. 10.1 and dx11 are necessary also. steam is a game vendor/playing platform that requires it being run in the background. updated shockwave player. nvidia/amd drivers. and dont get me started on online playing. there are a multitude of internet based games that need software.

You don't need any specific software just because you play games.

I've never had to un-compress a download from steam. In fact, I haven't used a compression tool to un-compress a game in over a decade(not since shareware and dial-up was common) - Maybe you do if you pirate games, but we don't do that here. If a game needs DX11, it checks for it, and installs it if needed. Drivers updates aren't just for gamers, yes you need them, but so does everybody else. Online games may need specific software(flash, shockwave, or silverlight), but they generally install what's needed when you install the game.

At this point we are just talking about basic things that need to be checked for any PC, kind of getting away from the original question. Perhaps this is what OP is wanting to know but he hasn't chimed in.

right...so he gets a bsod cuz he didt update his mobo when booting up counterstrike?
