Need a AMD A6 6400 CPU replacement for gaming

I run a Gigabyte F2A68HM-HD2 motherboard with A6 6400 CPU, Radeon(TM) RX 460 Graphics Card and 8 GB of RAM I do not use the CPU integrated graphics. The tests show that the CPU does not meet the minimum standards of some of my games which shows during game play The mother board has 'FM2+/FM2' on it Can I replace the CPU with a FM2+ type CPU? If not what is the best FM2 CPU replacement for gaming Thanks

Yes, you can use a FM2+ processor. If you want to stay within the 65W TPD range, your best choice is the AMD A10-7800 or AMD A10-7860K
95W CPUs: Athlon X4 880K or AMD A10-7890K

With these CPUs their clockspeeds make a big difference. Whatever you pick, try for something around 3.5ghz or faster. You have a dual core now which is why you don't meet some requirements. Once you have a faster quad core then you'll be able to play all but the most demanding CPU intensive games, and even in those games the RX 460 will also struggle so it's kind of a moot point.

Since you do not need integrated graphics, you should consider the Athlon X4 880K. Its currently the fastest CPU that works on FM2+ socket.

If you need any faster you may need to move to Intel's offerings or AMD Ryzen.

And it has 2 Modules, 4 Cores rather than 1 Module 2 Cores of your current APU. However TDP is higher at 95W.

At stock the Athlon X4 880K (4.0-4.2 GHz, steamroller) is faster than a FX 4350 (4.2-4.3 GHz, piledriver). When overclocked to 4.5 GHz the 880K has single thread perfromance comparable to the 5 GHz FX 9590 single core speed (about the equivalent of a Skylake/Kaby Lake ~3.0 GHz CPU)

Essentially you will get somewhere near the performance of a i7 6700HQ laptop at stock, and an i5 6400 when overclocked. All for less than US$100.

Yeah I don't need the integrated graphics and was considering the Athlon. This will do until I upgrade the motherboard
