Need a CPU recommendation

Hello all,

First off let me say I play mostly multiplayer FPS games -- main purpose for me

So right now I have the AMD A10-5700 APU and I'm going through a massive upgrade stage. I'm planning on buying an R9 290X, 650W XFX 80+ Bronze PSU, and a new 144hz 1ms 1920 x 1080 monitor. Cash is tight, but I think I need to upgrade my cpu, too. My mobo model is p7-1297cb. I don't know If I have the money to upgrade that, but maybe a slight upgrade in CPU will be beneficiary. I read the CPU hierarchy list, and my CPU still has yet to have a CPU 3 tiers above it, but I don't know. I was thinking maybe spending 125 on an AMD FX-6350? Or maybe there is a really nice top tier intel card less than 150?

I'm strapped for cash atm after this big spending on the other 3 items. I could wait until August (my birthday) or Christmas to then upgrade my CPU, or I could upgrade it now cheap and be fine. I need help. Maybe my a10 5700 will be fine for now?

Thank you all in advance!

Yeah just wait it out till Windows 10 comes around and see how it goes. Upgrading from Windows 7 and Windows 8 will be free, and APUs like yours get a HUGE gain in performance for games in the next DirectX. Your CPU is not terrible either actually. Stick with the graphics card upgrade for now. And I'd also actually wait for the R9 300 series which is supposed to start coming out next month. The prices of current cards will drop even more.
Your CPU runs on the FM2 socket. You can not slot an FX CPU into it, you will need a new motherboard.

I would suggest you spend less on your graphics card and monitor, and invest in a better CPU like an I5 or FX83xx CPU, you will definitely have an imbalance system otherwise.

If you plan a big upgrade, I suggest you replace all components. You can buy the motherboard and CPU after 1-2 months maybe. So it will be a delay but you will be more happy and your build will stand up for 5 years at least.

Can you give me a relatively affordable suggestion on cpu and mobo? If I'll need to spend north of 250 for them combined, I might just wait until after the summer to upgrade again and just live off of mantle for now. Or medium quality.

relative affordable on intel i5 family would be the i5 4430 with a H87 mobo would be around 250 to 300 closer to 300 i think, it would be a good choice if you do not plan to OC or run SLI/Crossfire configs.

with AMD you get a lower price and more cores with a FX8300 and any amd 970 chipset mobo would do an excellent job and you can get that for 180 to 250 i think.

Just check the regular sites like newegg, tigerdirect and amazon for best prices on both intel or amd set up.

But my advice would be to get the upgrades you have in mind now and wait for your Birthday or Christmas to get a better set up for CPU and MOBO like an i5 4690k with a Z97 chipset so you can OC and possibly SLI/Crossfire if you ever want or something better like an i7 5XXX...

Can you link me the AMD ones you were talking about?

Intel ones too if you have the time, please.

Thank you st3v3o and NightAntilli. I think I'm going to wait on upgrading but that CPU and mobo combo could come in handy for me down the road. I'll revisit this thread in the future. Wish I could pick both of your answers as solutions.

I get out of school the last week of April. I'm hoping something comes out before May! Some people told me the r9 290x price will stay around the same vicinity it's at and the r9 300 series prices will just be inflated.

By the way, my CPU, for some reason, "isn't compatible" with Far Cry 4. I was extremely surprised.

Phenom II X4 955 is the minimum.

Don't always trust those things. Assassin's Creed Unity for example lists an FX-8320 as the minimum CPU, and yet an FX-6300 runs it fine:

And with DX12 around the corner, which will greatly reduce CPU overhead, it might be a waste of money to get a better CPU. Your CPU is basically the same as an Athlon 750K. So, here you'll have an idea of how it will run Far Cry 4:

Also note that the recording drops the FPS, as stated in the video information box. Also not that that graphics card being used is not really the fastest out there.

Alright. Thanks for those, that was helpful.
