Hi I am trying to upgrade the cpu in my compaq presario.. it has m2n68-la (narra5) mobo. It came with a sempron le1300. I tried a 945 Deneb in it and it kept crashing windows after a few minutes of use. I thought maybe bios issue but do not know anything about that so tried a phenom x4 9750 which is working good but lacks the speed I need to run pcsx2 and dolphin emulators. My question is what processor would be recommended for this board that should be a simple changeout without any bios issues and runs at least 3.0Ghz? I have no problem downgrading to a dual core from a quad core to get the speed I need the emulators only require a dual core and as I use this PC for mostly emulation I can deal with less multi-tasking ability. Or if anyone can help explain how to update/change bios for a processor change. HP specs say this is a AM2+ socket which i believe means an AM3 processor should work?

TDP max is 95 watts on that motherboard. The Phenom II X4 955 is available in 95 and 125 watt versions. Which one did you try?

The Thermal Design Power (TDP) is the average maximum power a processor can dissipate while running commercially available software. TDP is primarily used as a guideline for manufacturers of thermal solutions (heatsinks/fans, etc) which tells them how much heat their solution should dissipate.

I tried a Phenom II x4 945 Deneb in it. It was rated 95w but like I said it would boot up and run correctly for about 5 minutes then I would get the generic windows blue error screen. Windows would restart on its own to avoid damage to my system, but then would re-boot and do the same thing. I am correct in my understanding that an AM3 processor should work in this board right? I even ran the windows performance assessment and it recognized the cpu had been changed and gave it a 7.9 rating (before it crashed). This is why I thought it may be a BIOS issue, which as I said I know nothing about updating or changing. I have gone with a Phenom x4 for now but it lacks the speed I need. I am looking for a processor that I hopefully can just drop into this mobo with no issues. If you think the 955 will plug and play i will give it a try I just dont want to keep purchasing and returning cpu's till I get one that works for me.
