I used to own the samsung syncmaster 206bw which was an amazing monitor, it was amazing for gaming and great response time. Sadly it broke.

I recently bought an Asus, but it's not very good, it's very dim, and has poor colors. Can anyone recommend me a good monitor for gaming?

Solution

The issue you are having is that you are comparing your glossy screen Samsung 206bw monitor to a matte screen monitor. Glossy screens over-saturates colors and gives them that shinny look; in other words colors are more vibrant. The Asus and most other monitors have matte screens rather than glossy.

The only two companies that I am aware of which makes glossy screens are Apple and HP. I don't like monitors with glossy screen personally. You need to be careful when searching for a glossy screen monitor though. Many times the word "Glossy" will appear in the description. But it does not refer to the screen itself; it is referring to the bezel...

Samsung PX2370 is listed as one of the best LCD monitors on cnet.com It is an LED monitor with 3ms response time. 1920x1080 resolution. It has standard 60hz refresh rate. However, if you are like me, you are after a 120hz monitor with similar specs but there aren't many choices out there for 120 hz monitors. I have come across the following ACER model:

The LG's screen actually has a matte finish.

Actual glossy HP screens that I know of are:

HP 2210m Black 21.5" 2.5ms

HP 2711x Black 27" Full HD LED BackLight LCD Monitor

as i've stated in some other posts, have a look at viewsonic's offerings. the response times might seem high but anything 16ms or below is fine for a 60hz / 60fps signal. for reference my old vp201b had a 16ms r/r and i never experienced lag once. colors are most excellent as well.

glossy screens do make colors look more vibrant but also show glare very badly. matte screens avoid this for the most part but might look a little more dim. the matte screen is definitely the better choice.

i'm going to check out the hp 2210m and see how that goes. But it's really cheap so I'm a bit skeptical. Usually when I buy cheap monitors they don't turn out so well...
