Hello,

I have an hp elite 8000 small form factor model, this casing is slim and well when i initially bought it i bought it exactly for the size.

This computer has been great overall for the past couple of years i have hardly ever needed an upgrade and it performs fine. The biggest set back for this pc model is that i am limited in terms of what video cards i can put considering the size of the case along with the 240 watt power supply it comes with.

From what i searched a bit it doesn't seem i can actuality upgrade the power supply or buy one to fit this casing so i guess that is not an option unless i am mistaken.

My ideal video card would be one that is NOT noisy i much rather get something that is fanless but i am not if others would advise against it considering the limited air flow i have in this case.

The computer has:
An core 2 duo e8400 cpu
x2 sticks of ddr3 ram 1066
A 7200 rpm sata hard drive
a dvd player
and 2 usb ports i usually have something always plugged in

So i think maybe all of this is currently pulling under 100 watts, id like to get some low powered consumption cards as i don't want to put the power supply under heavy load.

My budget would be under $100, in terms of games i would like to run most of the modern ones at medium settings orso i never been one to crank up everything in high so i am quite satisfied with games running great in just medium high settings.

IF my psu from this desktop model can actually be upgraded i am willing to upgrade it but i don't think its possible.

Any suggestions for video cards and advice is appreciated.

Also i just signed up here, and i can't get my email confirmation via email even though i clicked on the button to request it around 3 times. It also doesn't go to my spam

My problem is the design of the casing seems to use a proprietary power supply so i can't ever upgrade it i think.

So i have to make due with what this computer has, but aren't those psu requirements listed nearly almost always overestimated?

Right now i have an nvidia quadro fx380 which takes like 40 watts

but aren't those psu requirements listed nearly almost always overestimated? - its a safe estimate. But its your PC. Take whatever risk you want. I just give advice.

The GPU might only take 40W but the rest of the PC takes the rest.

What make and model (and output) power supply have you got?

The power supply just says ''hp'' it doesnt seem to have a model number other than the part number : 503376-001

What gets me thinking is how can some of those dell alienwares run even higher end graphics cards than what you suggested when they are running something like a 220 watt ( if even that) psu along with faster memory, better cpu which takes more power etc. The x51 series come with a Nvidia GTX 660 and the rest of its hardware runs off a 240 watt psu?

Not only that the casing is much thinner and smaller than my desktop model..

What about a geforce 730 or an amd 7750?

Those are under $100 i believe and appear more better than the card you suggested. I only mention them because while checking back this topic i saw ''suggested related'' topics where others ask what video cards they can put in a 8200 or 8300 pc which uses the same power supply that i have.

Someone even commented that the geforce 730 gt only uses about 40 watts?

I've had great luck with the Zotac NVidia GT-610 for these types of situations. Fits the low profile fine, doesn't need much power, and over-performs compared to other low end NVidias. Only takes a PCIE-X1 slot.

Hey man I have the same PC and if your looking for a good gpu to play the modern games than I highly recommend the Msi low profile GTX 750 ti. It runs war thunder at 40fps-63fps! Here is the link to it- http://www.amazon.com/MSI-Computer-Graphics-Cards-N750TI-2GD5TLP/dp/B00SOXMPJY/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1454433968&sr=1-1&keywords=gtx+750+ti+low+profile

Assuming you are running the same HP8000SFF the original poster was ...

There's a lot of CYA going on in power supply minimum ratings for GPUs, because no one wants to deal with folks blowing up their PS and blaming the GPU. There's also no way to know what other power hog cards might be plugged into other slots. Your Core2Duo draws about 65W. One good way to know for sure where you are is to determine if the GPU uses only motherboard power, or if it has 6 or 8 pins power connector(s) for added power. With no added power the card consumption is limited to 75w, as that is all the mobo will support per card slot. Most 750tis do not draw more than 35-40w at full drive. I run mine at 100% 24x7 for SETI number crunching, and I seldom ever see draws in excess of 45w. This should leave plenty of power, and I do recommend one with a fan, like the one HAZZARD_77 recommended. If you read the reviews at Azon, you 'll see several folks that have run this on smaller power supplies than you have.
HWInfo is a great util that will give you some info on power, though as someone who has an 8000CMT I can say the HP boards don't report a lot of things they should, like power. Failing all else, listen to and feel your power supply, is it making a nasty whining noise, is the output air significantly hotter than it was? If so, a return may be in order and perhaps a Zotac lower-end, like maybe a 730, might be in your future. But if there's any way you can get a low profile 750 and make it fly, it's worth it. My 8000CMT has the 320w supply, and I've been running TWO 750ti SCs on it 24x7 for at least the last year, with no issues.

Go here and plug in the parts you have in your system. I'd bet the farm you'll be fine.
