Hello,

I'm looking for a 23"/24" monitor with HDMI, DVI, and speakers. The most important thing to me is the picture quality, excellent colors and a sharp picture.

Any recommendations?

Thanks.

What is your use?

If you are a gamer, then a TN based monitor is best due to the lower GtG timings. However TN based monitors don't produce colors as accurately.

If you are a graphics artist, photographer, etc, and interested in accurate color reproduction, IPS, MPVA, VA monitors are best. These monitors aren't as good for fast changing images like movies and games because they have relatively high GtG timings.

You still haven't mentioned what your main usage is.

I personally would recommend your first monitor there. It has 144Hz refresh with 1mS GtG, so it is ideal for movies and games. It is a TN panel though, so color fidelity won't be as good as an IPS display. That said, unless you are a graphics professional with an eye for that sort of thing, you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference side by side.

Sorry about that, my main use is gaming and other recreational usages (web browsing, videos etc.) I have a GTX 770 superclocked, so I could utilize the features of that 144hz monitor. To me, I really care about the picture quality, but I may use the 3D and other features of that monitor in the future. The question then is does that monitor warrant the extra $100?

It is a very highly regarded monitor and I have read a few reviews say as much. For gaming, I don't think you'll find a better one (unless you find one with G-Sync) for the money. As for G-Sync this is the one model that nVidia sell a G-Sync module for, if you feel comfortable taking the back off your monitor and installing it.

So the short answer, yes personally I believe the extra $100 is worth it.

Features aside, do you think the picture quality and colors are better on the more expensive one?

The VG248QE is going to be the better monitor. Both are TN panels so color reproduction is going to be similar. The VG248QE has the faster GtG timings and thus higher refresh rate, so it's going to look better when displaying fast moving images. Static images will probably look similar. However if you game or watch video / movies on your computer then you won't be looking at static images.
