I have an old GPU GTX 460 1 GB, this type concretely:

Its 5 years old card, i have a problem with one of the FAN, its making a LOUD noise last couple of days, and when it starts making those LOUD noises it also starts to spin really slow. The other fan is ok. I think the first fan is probably dying, i tried even cleaning the card from dust, didnt help, made it ever worse i think.
I was thinking about getting a new cooler (pasiv+fans), for my OLD gpu, something like this:

Arctic Cooling Accelero Twin Turbo III

But then i got tip how to fix it even cheaper, the solution is to take the one fan out and just replace it with soem general 90*90mm (or something fan), and attach is with plastic straps to the pasiv part of cooling... I dont want to invest a lot of money (i can i just dont want to 🙂 ), can you think of some other solution? What would you do?

Ok, cheapest option would be remove the heatsink and fans, give them a clean out with compressed air. Use sewing machine oil on the fan bearing (this can sometimes get it running again). Renew the thermal paste and put back.

No point spending the money on the AC TT III on a card that old, would be money down the drain ( which could better be used to get a new card).

What size are the current fans? As there are tons of replacements made for cheap:

Those separate fans are ok

the problem is im in central europe and shippinh from ebay would cost as much as the fans themselves + i would have to wait additional 2 weeks before they arrive... thats not good...

What do you think about removing the fand and the plastic protective cover of the card (and thus leaving just the passive cooling part of the cp uand installing 2 universal 90*90mm fans on the passive, tying them to the passive by zip ties...? its a "ghetto" solution but the cheapest and quickest... do you think it would work?

certainly worth a try, just constantly monitor the temps of the card. Make sure you run the fans at full speed to avoid any overheating.

I would suggest replacing the thermal paste on the GPU to give it the best chance of transferring the heat.
