Hi everyone, I currently need a new GPU. I had a PNY 12GB 4070 Ti. It burnt up on me when I was playing the new Runescape dragon wilds game on high settings Which I thought it was capable of handling. Thankfully none of my other PC parts were damaged.

My current build
CPU: Ryzen 9 7950X
Motherboard: MSI B650 Tomahawk
RAM: 64GB DDR5 6400mhz (2 x 32GB)
SSD: 4TB
PSU: 850w - - though with reading up on the 2 GPU's I've been considering I ordered a 1200w PSU from NZXT to ensure I have enough wattage.

As I mentioned above my old GPU was a PNY 12GB 4070 Ti that I had for 3 years.
The two GPU's I have been considering are:
NVIDIA 4090 series, I managed to find one semi close to msrp for $2500 from Zotac gaming
or
Sapphire Nitro AMD 7900 XTX

I've spoken to two friends of mine one said the 4090, the other said don't get a AMD 7000 series card as it is unplayable on Black ops 6, and to try and get a 50 series but I've seen more negatives about the 50 series than positive.

I have a 3k budget I've been saving extra money.

Im just looking for another honest opinion whether I should try and get the 4090 or the
Sapphire Nitro 7900 XTX

The GPU's connector had melted or the GPU itself died? If the connector is the likely source of the issue, then be sure to the 12v-2x6 harness is fully seated on both the PSU and GPU's ends.

Where are you located and what is your preferred site for purchase?

The 5000 series is something you should avoid actually and if anything it's getting worse for Nvidia with their driver issue, which brings us around to what you have available. You can side with the RTX4090 but sadly there's no equivalent to that from AMD's camp.

What resolution/refresh rate do you game at and what other titles do you plan on taxing the proposed GPU with?

Hi thank you for the reply.

From what the guys at metapcs told me since I live in Arizona I took it to them. The GPU itself died.

I’ve been weary of websites because a lot of 3rd party sellers raise a lot of red flags with questionable reviews/reputations. I’ve looked at Amazon, Newegg and Stock X. Newegg has a few new ones in stock but a bit out of my price range at the moment 3300+

I play on 1440p and have a Quantum dot OLED 360hz monitor from MSI

The main Titles I play are call of duty and greyzone warfare but I also play base building survival games type games as well.

Im mostly asking because I know the 4090’s are monster cards but they’ve also been discontinued to make room for the 50 series. If it would be more worth it to try and get a 4090 or its totally fine to settle for the 7900xtx which I’ve heard/read some great reviews on it but I also read sometimes their driver updates can cause issues.

if you have the money for it than go with the rtx 5090 - there is simply no competition
the fastest radeon card (7900xtx) is 35% slower in rasterization at 1440p and things get even worse
when you try to use features like RT or compare DLSS4 vs older FSR3 (its not even a debate) ...
even rtx 4090 is superior to 7900xtx by 15% in rasterization at 1440p and it also has better features -
when you turn on ray tracing rtx 4090 gets 30% faster on average compared to 7900xtx at 1440p .

make sure to get that stronger power supply though - you gonna need it for rtx 5090/4090 .

you may also consider upgrading your cpu to 9800X3D since 7950x is not an ideal gaming cpu -
your FPS would increase about 10% on average at 1440p using the 4090 ,
and whats even more important your 1% and 0,1% lows would also improve .
(this upgrade is not necessary though - 7950x is still very capable cpu and
you would actually lose performance in applications with this upgrade
but you would also get the best gaming cpu on the market) ...

Thank you for the feedback, I appreciate it. I ordered a 1200w and I can for sure look into the 9800x3d. I’ve heard that CPU was a great gaming one. Unfortunately I had not the best idea of what to buy when I built this PC which is why I’m doing my own research and asking people more well versed in PC builds.

I’ve got the 7900xtx nitro sitting in my pc right here and it’s pretty great for 1440p and most 4K games.

4090 or 5090 are faster for sure but also like at least twice (thrice for the 5090) as expensive and prone to melting. They are the absolute best however.

You can’t really go wrong either way.
