I am in need of a new processor. What is the best I can get with my motherboard (HP Pavilion P6000 Motherboard? I am looking into the Athlon x4 640, but I want better performance to play games such as CS: GO(If possible) . (My current processor is the AMD Athlon II X2 220.
Thanks

Dont invest in it, except for a new gpu, which will have the larger effect on fps (@1080p and above)

Save some money, and wait till ryzen gets released early 2017.
prices will drop for both amd and intel.

"Sorry forgot to say $100".

The Athlon220 is not terrible, if you do not need a quad core to run the games you are playing by far getting a used card that is lower wattage like a HD-7850, 7870 or R7-265,270270x,370. Or a GTX 760ti, 950ti, 960 with some molex to pcie adaptors should work.

LOOK UP THE CARD'S WATTAGE FIRST. Your pretty much stuck with either "pitcairn" or one of nvidia's newer cards that are known to be close or less than what pitcairn uses.

His OS system is tied to the board so a AthlonX4 or PhenomIIx4 is the best option unless he has $100+ to drop on a new OS.

A cpu upgrade would double the cores and increase the clock speed. True the new i5 and even skylake celeron and maybe even the athlon 5350 is faster, but the OS system kills the upgrade options.

If it's fairly cheap a used athlon X4 would be ok.

Gaming on the onboard Nvidia Geforce 6150 is not so great so almost any card is way better even a old HD-4870.

MERGED QUESTION
Question from MatthewPCGamer : "Compatible Processor with motherboard."

We have been down this road already. See merged post above, we just discussed a day ago.

The OS is NOT tied to your hardware, if you've updated to Windows 10 you can create a microsoft account and port it over to your new build.

As discussed, any CPU upgrade to that system is a waste of money.

Not at all. Right now the ONLY thing I would build a system with is Skylake, until Ryzen is available. In his case he has an AM2 socket, thereres literally no upgrade worth spending a penny on for his system.

It should work with your power supply, it doesn't have a pcie power plug on it they run just off the board power.

Just some info on the cpu you have now.

The athlonII 220 you have now is actually a athlonIIx4 with 2 cores disabled. On a board with ACC there is a good chance that the extra cores will unlock.

Some benchmarks. The athlonIIx4 does poorly because it has 512kb cache per core and no L3 cache.
To compare your AthlonII 220 the 240e is close. As you see it gets beaten by the celeron and is at the bottom of the chart.

When buying used people often go for more cpu cores and clock speed. If you look at the gaming benchmarks the PhenomII x3 does fairly well compared with the AthlonIIx4.
