Need a Workaroud Since PS4 Doesn't Allow Multi-output for Audio

So basically, Sony is absurdly stupid in not allowing audio to come through both a USB headset and the HDMI cable, so this makes it impossible to use a headset while recording gameplay on a capture card with audio unless I don't use a headset, which is just not an option for me.

Through the power of splitters or converters I'm fairly certain there is a possibility for this to work, but my brain is entirely burnt out from the amount of troubleshooting I've done today. Here's how the system works:

PS4 <--(HDMI)-->Capture Card<--(HDMI)-->Monitor
PS4 <--(USB)-->Headset

What I need is something that can convert HDMI audio to USB, but also have an HDMI output. I'd then also need a USB splitter so from the one USB cable I have coming from my headset, I can turn it into two so one end goes into the PS4 (to output my mic) and the other end going into the HDMI converter to get game audio.

PS4<--(HDMI)-->Splitter1<--(HDMI)-->Capture Card<--(HDMI)-->Monitor

?----(anything)--?

Splitter2<--(USB A)--Headset

PS4<-------------------------(USB A)--?

This is what I think I need. I have absolutely no idea where to find the splitters/converters I need or if they even exist. Hell, I don't even know if those splitters/converters will work for the purpose that I stated or if they'll drop quality or anything. I apologize if this is actually a simple thing or if I should've just done more research, but I am 100% burnt out on this right now.

Keep in mind Audio will only come through the PS4's HDMI port and not the USB. No the USB is not a problem as this is INTENTIONAL from Sony. If you know of any other way to get both game and chat audio from the PS4 into both the headset and capture card, I'd love to hear that too. That's my main goal, what I posted above is just a solution I'm proposing but don't know if it will work or where or what the parts are for it.

If I'm not clear on anything, please comment your question and I'll reply to the best of my ability.

Also I apologize if this is in the wrong section, I'm not too familiar with this site and some of the jargon on here. Please simply move the thread if it's not in the right section.

was there not an update which allowed you to specify input/output devices in settings?

i would not suggest using a usb headset as this is where you're getting into trouble.

A) use a microphone directly connected to the ps4. usb mic is fine. have the output set to hdmi. run the hdmi into your capture device that has an audio out of some sort. plug headphones into the audio out. if it doesnt have audio out, you can use a hdmi audio extractor before the recording device to give you audio out.

B) use an analog setup instead. similar to above but with usb to analog adapters and such for the ps4. also, if you do not need to hear game chat just your own chat its possible to do such. you could also mix in skype audio or similar.

tldr:

usb or 3.5mm mic -> ps4
ps4 (Hdmi out) -> recording device -> headphone (or alternatively a hdmi audio extractor before recording device if no output on device)

you may want a headphone amplifier depending on what headphones you use. this would be placed directly before them.

My gamecapture apparently has an audio in, but not an audio out. Pretty stupid. https://help.elgato.com/customer/portal/articles/1717068-elgato-game-capture-hd60-manual-and-user-s-guide#link03

So basically what you're saying is I need to buy an HDMI audio extractor that has both an in and an out port for HDMI as well as a USB out? Or does the extractor completely nullify the video signal so video will not pass through the gamecapture and then the monitor? And then in addition I need to buy a USB mic? That's gonna be a lot of extra money down the drain for something that a $400 game console should already be capable of. Also I need to hear party chat, not necessarily game chat.

Also about your question on the update, yes there was. You can either only do HDMI output or USB output. PS4 doesn't allow you to do both, unless I am mistaken. However, I've gone through a bunch of settings on the PS4 and I've found no way to do multi audio out, and have googled it many times and found no results.

Yes, that's not my issue. That's the first step of being able to see your screen on the game capture.

Solution

Alright, so it's a $10 cable. I have a crappy Playstation Gold headset where the bluetooth broke but can still use the 3.5 jack on the controller. So then I guess I need to buy this stupid cable and connect it all like that. What really pisses me off is the mic quality for that headset is garbage but it seems to be my only option. I'll just go ahead and get that. Thanks for the help! Time to get tangled in a bunch of wires worse than a monkey attempting cable management in a brand new PC with the world's unholiest PSU.

you keep fixating on usb audio out. i'm not sure there is a way to get 100% out of usb on ps4 as it does not allow you to use both at the same time. while its a silly decision i would agree, in practice most people do not record so it does not affect them at all.

people who record and do well generally make up the money for their expenditures fairly quickly. needing to buy decent equipment is a part of the job. heck, if you bought budget level components its under $100.

as i've said before.. getting a usb headset working in this setup may not be possible. i would suggest a separate mic and headphone as this should work better. or, use an analog headset not a usb one. in this way you could hook it up like above without needing separate mic and headphones.

in your case what i suggested was ps4->audio extractor ->recording device->monitor with the mic attached to the ps4 and headphones attached to the extractor. i do not have a ps4 but this is how most people who record seem to have things hooked up.

if you intend to stream or record, you dont want a crud headset or nobody will want to listen to you.

@rl
that looks like a standard 4pole to 3pole splitter. yes, if you use an analog setup its possible to hook headphones up that way but at the expense of crud hanging off your controller.
