Probably not worth it for gaming.
Your i7-7700 will turbo up to 4.2 on a single core.
The turbo is probably the best metric for a gamer.
The i5-10400 will be 4.3, not a great difference.
I think the i5-10600K which does 4.8 (more with overclocking) would be a good upgrade.
Here is a review:

When available, amd 5600x and rocket lake will be the go to gaming processors whenever they can be bought.

Adding 2 more cores will make it a bit easier on the CPU for games that can use all of them but I don't think it's much of an upgrade from what you have now. Increasing core count and getting faster cores would probably be a worthwhile upgrade. Since you're looking at a new board anyway, a Ryzen 5xxx series with a B550 or X570 board would do well.

Ah i see, https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product...00x-36-ghz-12-core-processor-100-100000023box I was looking to get this one but would you say an i7 7700 would be better if cheaper?
No no this is different. 3600X is a ryzen 5. There's a 6 in the 3600x

The one you're looking at is the Ryzen 9 3900X. That's far superior to both 7700 i7 and R5 3600X.

If you're buying for gaming, I'd say go for 5800X instead. If for productivity/both then the 3900x is a great pick!

Doubt you will see much performance increase for the money, all depends what games you play to be fair if you are looking for single core performance the AMD will make more sense, the 5000 series tho, the 3000 series if you get a ryzen 9 are great for workstations, editing videos, multicore scores hold up to the 5000 series but the single core isnt gonna be worth it for the 3000 imo. Intels gonna be coming out with the PCIE4 bits by the end of Q1 2021 if you can wait everythings gonna only get cheaper. Someone leaked info about AMD's next core architecture, if they can do over 5ghz keeping up the IPC count then they will be putting everything to shame, even the 5000 series. I'd wait, but then im still sat here using a 4440 and GTX970 :p my pc is a gaming and media centre and it still does me well

oh and the 5600x isnt unavailable everywhere, its listed on mindfactory.de for near MSRP apparently in stock
