i currently have these parts at my disposal:
gigabyte h61m-ds2 rev 2.1 mobo
g620t pentuim dual core cpu
2 8gb pc3 ( forgot speed as im at work)
2 2gb pc3 ( all Kingston and I think same speed for all 4)
1 ATI HD4870 x2 GPU
1 Thermaltake 500watt PSU
1 stock socket 1155 cooler
1 antec 900 case
3 dvi monitors
3 HDD's ( 1 250gb, 2 1tb)

currently I have it all assembled and running very well. Im going to upgrade and need advice. My graphics card is outdated I know, but runs everything I play with no issues and only hiccups once in a while because of CPU ( cpu usage stays in the top 90% when im in a game).
In my eyes I have 2 options available. I can get an i5 for my current board or get a 6 core and new mobo with 4ram slots and usb 3.0 for about same price. which is gonna be better for all around use and mild gaming?

asus 990fx motherboard gives best gaming performance for the fx chip and toms hardware smart buy because it will give good performance for crossfire and eyefinity that you are running while properly supporting extra hard drives and 125watt latest fx chips that maintain better clock rates. the difference in the prices of the amd cpu's may seem strange as the 6350 is only 20 dollars more but is a much better core out of box for gamers

ordering the motherboard now and saving for the cpu would give u future upgrade ability with pleasing performance and stability

i also have a socket 775 core2quad cpu ( think its a Q9900 or something), would i be better off buying a motherboard for that cpu, one that uses pc3 ram? i havent researched that option yet as i just thought about it. from what i understand that socket (775) is dead ended. i dont wanna buy stuff if i dont have to but id like to have usb 3.0 built in and i have 8gb pc2 ram also but im trying to stay somewhat modern you know? so i have three options:
mobo for q9900 socket 775
i5 for current board ( no usb 3.0 and only 2 ram slots)
or new 6 core amd with new mobo and usb 3 and 4 ram slots
what would yall do? remember im not a hard core gamer but use my comuter for my vynil plotter and autcad also and its used as my media server also. thanks again!

well its actually normal to experience 90% load and higher in tasking because its a dual core and even cpu's with 4 and 8 cores will automatically get unused cores parked into a lower power state until the few active cores come under heavy enough load to activate more cores.

@matt798 i honestly dont game hard at all also my GPU isnt dx11 capable anyways. if i can find a socket 775lga board with 4 pc3 ram slots maybe i can afford a ssd drive too. only game i play that requires dx 11 is crysis 3 nd i hardly ever play ed it anyways ( used my msi 610gt with 2gb gddr3 and it was HORRIBLE) i could get a 775 mobo for like 80 im sure thatd let me get a 100 ssd and maybe a usb 3.0 pci card too. what u think?

well looked at cpu again ( actually took it off of the motherboard this time) and its a c2q q9400 id use mobo its on but its a funky HP style board that I cant use in anyother case but the stock one and it has ddr2 ram slots.

hmm well what u should understand is the way your favorite games run.

1 core or many cores

in the case of 1 core and dx9 your first choice with a gpu that has ddr3 as u will have better frame rates with a weaker gpu

I have the GPU im going to use ( hd 4870 x2) nd I run games like the darkness 2, need for speed rivals, and saints row 4. I have plenty of each type of ram ( pc3 and pc2) I don't know which way to go. im searching for a 775 socket cpu with 4 pc3 ram slots but that's close to impossible. so now im lookin for an amd cpu and mobo combo. im honeslty confused now. im just thinking of putting in an i5 in what I have and be done, im getting to the point where im gonna be in deeper than what the machine is worth.

lol sorry didnt mean to cause any confusion

take your time in deciding after all a computer could be any old thing unless your using it for games and various other things

thats why there is so many choices and prices
