Greetings fellow PC enthusiast. My brother asked me to help him with picking some parts for his gaming rig.

It's not a a build from scratch, although he wants to upgrade the most important components.

I have been out of the PC market loop for a while so I seek your advice/opinions with the parts I picked. I'm most conflicted with picking the MB, since I am not familiar with the new X570 chip line.

MotherBoard options (Around USD170 budget):

ASRock X570 PHANTOM GAMING 4

ASRock X570 PRO4

MSI MPG X570 GAMING EDGE WIFI

GIGABYTE X570 GAMING X

RAM kit options (USD90-100 budget):

CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2933

CORSAIR Vengeance RGB Pro 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 DRAM DDR4 3000

G.SKILL Trident Z RGB (For AMD) 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3600

CPU: Ryzen 3700x (Definite purchase).

GPU: GTX1060 (Already Owned).

I would like the MB to have good build quality with decent VRMs and heatsinks.

It needs to be just capable enough for a mid-range build, ie. no need for unnecessary tech that will never be touched. My bro doesn't care for built in WIFI for example. Function > Bizzaz.

THANX YALL!

There is nothing much in x570 that a b450 cannot provide, unless you are pushing extreme clocks. You can ignore the PCPP disclaimer as it cannot distinguish between old and new b450 boards. The MSI MAX Series was launched along with Ryzen 3rd gen. processors and is compatible right out of the box with updated BIOS and larger BIOS cache than previous b450s, robust VRM settings and thermal design, and adequate power cycles for even overclocking. Read the reviews for the board listed if you have any doubts.

There is more than better stability on higher clocks as well cores. There's PCIe 4.0, which if you want to future proof, is always a good thing. Memory compatibility, running higher mem clocks is another thing that many forget, the X570 have way better compatibility which means more performance out of the box!
One mobo I recommend would be the X570 Steel Legend, dropped in price from 200$ and you can now find it just over 160...

PCIe 4 is miles away from being implemented with bandwidth saturation in any component, and by the time it is more common there will be better boards out there.
The memory compatibility on the MAX board is the same as it has been implemented on the b550 architecture, and this was said by an AMD guy in one of the LTT vids, cant remember which one though. It supports upto 4133mhz out of the box and hence why 3600mhz has been suggested.

Ya, reading the suggestions, and knowing my budget, I decided to go with an above average x470 or B450 over a mediocre X570.

Any suggestions for a good x470/b450 board that has good VRMs and features costing $150-170?

Thanks for this great suggestion! ya, I decided to go with an above average x470/b450 over a mediocre X570. Once other components necessitate X570 level tech I might upgrade at the time.

For now, unfortunately the board you suggested is not delivered by NewEgg so it's not internationally shipped :/

Got any suggestions for a compatible, good x470/b450 board that has good VRMs and features costing $150-170?

Thing is, if you are getting 3700x other than the MSI MAX Series boards, no other b450/x470 chipset is guaranteed to come with updated BIOS. If the vendor is clearing old stock by chance, and sends you a older board, you are stuck with a non functioning board that needs a older CPU to update BIOS. And among the MAX Series boards, the Tomahawk is the best. And it does say "In stock"...

I would either get that or go with a x570 as their thermal design is sufficient other than a few MSI entry level boards.

If you are not in US, then you need to figure out locally. If Newegg doesnt ship this board, then it might not ship to your location at all.
