Hello all, and thank you in advance for looking in to my predicament.

So, just in time for the release of DOOM: Eternal, my surround sound system crapped the bed. It was an old RCA system that I was able to daisy chain via an HDMI switch/matrix, and I'm grateful it lasted as long as it did with the quality and volume it did. However, I am on the cusp of a move and I am taking this opportunity to upgrade my surround sound system to something that is not only modern, but awesome.

My current set up is as follows:
-LG TV https://www.lg.com/us/tvs/lg-42CS560-lcd-tv?bvstate=pg:8/ct:r
-FOSPOWER HDMI switch https://fospower.com/hdmi-5-x-1-audio-extractor-converter-switch-with-optical-and-lr-audio-output
-RCA surround system https://www.newegg.com/rca-rt2390/p/N82E16882125043
-hardware hooked to TV: Xbox One X, Nintendo Switch, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, Super Retro Trio 3. Anticipate hook up with Xbox Series X eventually.

I would like some advice as to modern surround sound multi-system hook up, as well as some advice to future proof for other systems via HDMI (can't predict new hook ups after all). My budget is not unlimited (please don't suggest sound systems that cost several thousand dollars), but is within $1-2k for TV, HDMI switch/matrix, A/V receiver. I am willing to get a new TV, HDMI switch/matrix and A/V receiver for surround sound, but I do need some guidance with the latest tech to get the most bang for my buck. I do understand some basics for surround sound, but the last time I took a serious study in the subject was maybe 2003-2004, so anyone who is more current would be greatly appreciated for their input.

I am maybe 1-2 steps below an audiophile. I am not willing to re-mortgage my home based on sound quality alone, but I am suspending myself from all gaming until I can get myself a good quality sound system again. The TV speakers just are not the same and it makes me sad.
