Need advice on progressive upgrade

Nov 14, 2012
Approximate Purchase Date: Now

Budget Range: £500-£600 (For phase 1 upgrade)

System Usage from Most to Least Important: VMware, mid-level gaming (don’t need fancy)

Are you buying a monitor: No

Parts to Upgrade:

Do you need to buy OS: Yes (I will buy W7 64bit Pro)

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: or whatever anybody can suggest

Location: Berkshire UK

Parts Preferences: by brand or type (e.g.: I would like to upgrade to Intel CPU)

Overclocking: No

SLI or Crossfire: Maybe

Your Monitor Resolution: 1440x900

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: I want to move out from AMD, get a 64bit Proc to be able to use more than 3Go for my Virtual machines.

Additional Comments:
Software: VMware Workstation 9, Civilization 5, Settler, Total War 2 (Samurai), AOE III, FSX, DCS Black Shark, DCS A10, DCS Flaming Cliff.
Please note that even though I play games the priority for this PC will be running my VMs (hence the 16Go RAM). I also don’t need it to be the best gaming PC in the world and decided that an i7 was not worth the extra money (I prefer saving this money to buy a better GPU later).

Below the kit that I have selected;

• Asus Sabertooth Z77, Intel Z77

• 16GB (4x4GB) Corsair DDR3 Vengeance Low Profile Jet Black, PC3-12800 (1600), Non-ECC,

• Samsung SH-S222BB/RSMS, 22x DVD±R, 8x DVD±DL, DVD+RW x8/-RW x6, x12 RAM, SATA,

• 730W be quiet! BN183, Modular, 88% Eff', 80 PLUS Bronze, SLI/CrossFire, EPS 12V, Quiet Fan, ATX, PSU!-bn183-modular-88-eff-80-plus-bronze-sli-crossfire-eps-12v-quiet-fan-atx-psu

• Intel Core i5 3570,1155, Ivy Bridge, Quad Core, 3.4GHz, 5 GT/s DMI, 650MHz GPU, 6MB Smart Cache, 34x Ratio, 77W, Retail

• Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound

For now I will keep my current GPU (512Mb Nvidia Geforce 8600GT), ATX case and HDD (500 SATA 300) from my old PC and in a few months I will look to upgrade with a decent gaming GPU, SSD drive and 21” screen (this will be phase 2)

As I am not really familiar with building PC (last time I did it was in 1999) nor with the recent hardware it would be nice if you can help me out with the questions below;

1) Do you seen any compatibility issue with the listing above?
2) How do I know if the PSU (730W) is enough for my new hardware?
3) I can’t figure out what air cooler is best for my Processor, “Arctic Cooling Freezer i30” ? The NH-D14-2011 doesn’t seems to exist for 1155 socket.
4) Any other suggestion, comment? Anything missing?

Thanks for your Help

rest looking good .
not that familiar with the beQuite brand power supply but hear good things and 730watt will be fine for any future upgrades
