Hi everybody,

Recently my personal computer decided to not to power up. I ended up bread boarding and it worked for a while and died again. The motherboard led turns on but doesn't power up. Another shot at bread boarding but no result so I decided that the motherboard or the cpu is dead.

I called a few places and I've been quoted around $700 for a new i7 6700k CPU and a Z170 DDR3 motherboard. My main concern is keeping my DDR3 rams to save some money and a decent motherboard that I can install the huge GTX 690.

I have i7 6700K and i7 4790K in mind. 4790k is a little bit better I guess but 6700k is newer.
Or even an AMD combo which will be cheaper.

But my main question is which motherboard?
I have no idea of the chipsets and I'm facing 3 options for 6700k and 4 options for 4790k.
I will appreciate if anyone can give me some advice regarding which CPU & Motherboard combo I should go to get the best performance from my existing rams and stuff.

Thanks in advance

AMD AM3+ FX-9590 Eight Core 4.7GHz 220W Black Edition CPU

ASUS AM3+ ATX Crosshair V Formula-Z or
ASUS AM3+ ATX Sabertooth-990FX-R2

How well did you like your I7-3770K? A Fx-9590 would not be quite as good.
At stock it had a passmark rating of 9597 and a single thread rating of 2088.
If you overclocked, add 20%.
The FX-9590 has already been overclocked to near max. It has a rating of 10281 and a single thread rating of 1725. It would be similar in multithreaded apps and somewhat worse in gaming.

The i7-6700K has a rating of 10861 for all cores, but 2288, much superior in single thread and gaming.
Plus, you can expect a 15% overclock.

Supports DDR3 and I...
If you want to go with your existing RAM then you are forced to stick with LGA1150 (Haswell and Boradwell) or go with LGA2011 (Ivy Bridge-E). LGA1151 (Skylake) and LGA2011/v3 support DDR4 only. So in my opinion, go with the 1150 socket since it is newer technology and you have more selections to choose from (both cpu and mobo). The 4790K is probably the best 1150 CPU that money can buy (excluding Xeon) so I believe you should stick with that.

Regarding the chipset differences, have a look on this chart:

DDR3 on Skylake motherboards will only be on low end motherboards.

My suggestion is to use a less expensive i5-6600K and a Z170 motherboard.
It need not be an expensive enthusiast model.
Budget $150 for the motherboard and $250 for the 6600K.
The Z170 is needed for overclocking the "K".
Yes, you will need a relatively expensive DDR4 ram kit, but you can recoup some of that by selling your ddr3 kit.
32gb of g.skil or crucial value ram will be about $170.
