I have a P III 800 Mhz and a sucky cooler that heats my pentium up to 68 C. I plan to change a cooler, and this is what I prefer (CoolerMaster DP5-6H51) :

http://www.coolermaster.com/products/cpucooler/fcpga/dp5-6h51.html

It's actually for 1.2 Ghz Pentium III processor, it'll work on my system right (I may overclock mine to 148x6)? Also, is installing it that hard? Do I need tremendous power/strengh to do it? What is the percentage of people damaging their processor when installing a cooler?

Please reply me, a newbie cooler installer.

It works, and now my processor is operating at 800 MHz. Istalling it was a breeze though, my screwdriver slipped and hit the mb several times. Anyway, what is the gummy thing below the cooler? Will the cooler work if I, for example, skin it off?

The gummy thing is thermal material. Thermopad or whatever people call it. It is used to fill in the mico-gaps between the cpu core and the heatsink so that heat transfer is optimum.

You MUST have this for the Socket CPUs.(I don't know about the slot ones) Without it your CPU will get really hot and then die. Heck I think a Tbird will only last about 30 seconds without it. Now you don't have to use the little gummy thing that comes with it. In fact in most cases thermal paste/compound works better.

Go to http://www.articsilver.com

Artic silver is a thermal compound you can use. But the website gives you details on how to use it and perhaps will answer your questions about why etc. Or at least you can see pictures of it in use.
