Hello, I'm looking to get an external HDD to plug into my Wii U, and Nintendo recommend a HDD with a dedicated power source which uses an A/C adapter. Searching for this on Amazon brings up unrelated results, and the external HDDs I've found are all powered by USB.

Can any kind person possibly recommend an external HDD with a dedicated power source for use with my Wii U? Once I configure it for the Wii U it will not be usable for other purposes, so 500GB is more than enough space. Ideally I'd like to stay below the £50 mark but I can stretch that budget.

Thanks for your time, and your help. I welcome a discussion about possible options!

No it isn't.
Setup is straightforward; simply plug in the included power supply and USB cable,
I searched on Amazon (UK), and all of the drives I am aware of that are powered by an AC adapter are no longer sold....seems everything has gone to USB 3 that are powered by USB....You may have to buy an enclosure and a hard drive:

This is for a 1TB drive, the enclosure and the ac adapter - all together it is about £60. You might be able to find a 500GB HDD for a few dollars less....

Thanks for your responses! Someone Somewhere, the drive you linked to is powered by USB, unfortunately. I would've bought it otherwise!

Ronintexas, the drive and enclosure you linked to look perfect. If I need to I will do that. I built my PC last year so hopefully I won't screw anything up!!

Thanks to both of you for your time and help :)

Apologies, you're absolutely right. The portable version was confusing me. I just did a search for that drive on Youtube and found an unboxing video: it looks perfect. I'll definitely go for that one, thanks for your help and your patience!
