I am posting this question out there for any body and everybody. I plan on building my own computer (DDR solution) and my intentions are to do just about everything your can do wht a computer including playing insanely cool games, homework (im in college), watching and ripping dvds, burning cds and storing a hella large amount of mp3's etc.

If you get my jist i was wondering what operating system should i use. Im leaning towards windows 2000, or 98 SE probably not NT5.0 (cuse i like the user settings for computer dummies). I was wondering about windows XP but as we all know microsoft usually gets it right around the third version of a peice of software (or six...service pack 6) so i might wait on that one. Feel free to give me your two cents or three cents for that matter.

AFAIK, win2000 = nt5.0.
My suggestion is dual boot winME with a flavour of linux. You can do pretty much anything with that.

Another computer wanted. Donations accepted. :^)

You must have Win 98 SE (or Me) for gaming compatability.

I like Win2000 but I'm not sure you need it (or would like to pay for it).

I do pretty much everything you want to do on your PC (never ripped DVD's, though I do have the software to do it). All this can be achieved with Win '98.

I suggest a dual boot of WinME and Win2k. Then you get the stability of Win2k(use for homework stuff) plus the gaming ability of WinME. Also put a third partition on your disk that is Fat32, you can use this partition to put MP3's, movies, etc. to share between your dual boot OS's. Plus if you ever crash, you have this third partition that will keep all your data.

I don't know of any website that will show you step by step, but I will list them.

1. Boot using a win98 boot disk
2. Use Fdisk to create a primary DOS partition and an extended DOS partition. Remember to leave room for a third partition later on.
3. Format c: making it a system disk
4. Install Windows ME on the c drive
5. Once windows ME is installed, boot up your computer with windows 2000 boot disks.
6. It will come to a point where it will show you your hard drive configuration. You will see two partitions and then some empty space. You want to create a partition on the empty space and then it will ask you if you want to format it and set it up as an NTFS or FAT32. Thats your call what file system you want, but I suggest NTFS. Windows 2000 will format this partition and install itself on this third partition.
7. You are done. When you boot it will ask you if you want to load win2k or windows.

If you choose the win2k side to be NTFS, your winME will not be able to access this drive. It will see it, but you will not be able to access it. Your win2k will be able to see everything. And you still have that extended DOS partition to keep all your data files for both OS's. Does all this make sense? If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Even better, buy PowerQuest's PartitionMagic 6.0. It's only $40. Plus, this way, you can split up your hard drive without losing any data.

BTW, as for a boot disk, a former Winmag.com writer Fred Langa has this article about creating the only boot disk you'll ever need. With this, you always have something to diagnose problems (create 2 copies).

But, I suggest Partition Magic for the ease of use. Plus, if you buy Drive Image or Norton Ghost, you can back it up to a CD-R before you do anything in case you screw up.

Hope that can start you off...
