Well I have been in the IT field for a while, but stick to the networking side of the house. I have a background in network security and would like to build a rig that I could use for brute force and/or litecoin mining (figured I might as well put it to use when I'm not using it). I am not a novice, but have never pieced together a workstation for performance. I do not need it rack-mountable since it will be sitting at my home, but I do not want it open to the air (needs a case). I have a budget of roughly 4k. Needs to be fast at video editing as well.

What would you buy?

I have a Fries roughly an hour and a half drive, but don't want to go there and buy shit that doesn't work together.

Was thinking the following:
4x XFX 7950's
1200watt corsair power supply
i7 3770K ivy processor
16G DDR3 2400 G.Skill ram
No idea on motherboard?
No idea on case?

Do I need 4? Probably not, but why not?

I was looking at the ASUS Sabertooth Z77. Also, what would be a good size case to allow good cooling? Will be running a water cooling system as well.

I will probably be running a list of hashes maybe 1-2 days out of the week. The rest of the time it may see video editing, possibly gaming, or might get into litecoining.

If you are planning to build a dedicated litecoin mining rig, the instructions here are pretty good. However, I noticed they show an AMD based system with fairly low powered CPU and you're looking to build a higher powered multi use rig. You'll definitely want a large case with plenty of fans to keep those 4 GPU's cool when mining!
