Need Assistance Purchasing New Card

Hello all!

First time posting here and was hoping to get some advice from the fellow members here. I am upgrading my graphics card this week and need some help on which would be good for me. My current set up is the following:

ASRock Fatal1ty P67 PROFESSIONAL
Intel i7-2600K (3.4GHz)
CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB Ram
2 Nvidia Geforce GTX 275 (SLI)
Cooler Master HAF 922M ATX Black Mid-Tower Case
and i play on an Asus VE278Q 27" Widescreen Full HD LED Monitor - 1080p, 1920x1080

I've wanting to upgrade my graphics cards for awhile so i was thinking of the GTX 580 or GTX 590. I just want to be able to play some Directx 11 games on max like Battlefield 3 when it comes out. The price for the gtx 580 seems good for my pocket and I know the 590 is like $700 which im willing to go for too but no idea if its worth the money for what I want to do (never seen the card in action) Thank you all for your time and efforts on helping me, I appreciate it.

What is the make/model of your PSU?

I'd say your on the right track.The GTX580 is definitly a card you would want to have for BF3.I played the Alpha and the graphics look stunning but it seems a lot more CPU dependant that GPU.Although since it was an Alpha and their focus wasn't on graphics but more on their server quality I might even guess that you might need a GTX580 SLI to max out everything and stay above 60fps.

It's up to you since it is your purchase and I don't know if you favor Nvidia over AMD but in the benchmarks the 6970 crossfire is only 10-30 fps behind the GTX580 SLI while costing about $200-$300 less.Just something to think about.

I would also suggest you stay away from the GTX590 if your looking for maximum performance.The GTX590 had it's speed reduced due to power limiations.So a GTX580 SLI is faster.

I have a 700watt OEM ATX PSU REV2 Power Supply (its from my Alienware computer I had before i built this current one, I do want to get 1K watt soon)

Ya i got into alpha testing too for BF3 and it wasnt playing all to well compared to my uncles rig (which mine is better slightly just except for graphics card but hes all amd/ati set up)

* ya i do plan on SLI but just only on planning getting the 1 so far, maybe next month ill ad the 2nd one. Ya I've been reading mixed posts about the 590 thats why I was iffy.

I heard on the fourms at Alpha a lot of Intel builds were having problems running the game.Could be that.

I have a Phenom ii x4 965 @ 3.8ghz and a 6870 stock.I was playing it with everything maxed out and maintained in the 60's and mid 50's with smoke and other action type stuff.Your GTX275 SLI is about the same if not powerful than my 6870 and your 2600k blows my CPU out of the water.

What problems did you encounter?

Just had a lot of video lag when a lot of stuff was happening, was doing great when i spawn in outside the subway level and once i go into the subway area where all the people were shooting just got laggy and skipping here and there.

It's probably just an Alpha glitch.Their were lots of bugs.

So what card are you thinking of getting?

I wouldn't reccomend getting that one.It's a reference design and the cooelrs on those cards really suck.Since the GTX580 already gets really hot I would suggest getting an aftermarket cooler version.
