Need better choice for radiator fans

I built my watercooling probably about a year ago. Has been running fine. QX6700 3.20 temps at idle around 51-53C. In the summer idle temps can be about 7 degrees higher. Anyway, at the recommendation of someone here in the forums, I went with this fan:

http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/de12trblhisp.html

I had already bought Yate Loons but this guy was totally sold on these so I bought them. I have 3 mounted on a 120.2 outside of my rig. They are mounted to pull air through the radiator. They are each separately controlled and I'm using a separate power supply.

So the problem? Frickin noise. When I first built the system, I thought to myself, "Hey, noise is just the price you pay for good cooling", but I can't deal with it any longer. I'm enjoying Bioshock, Warhammer, etc and the noise is no longer acceptable. So what would you do? I think my current temps are about par for this CPU. It runs rather hot anyway but I also have two GTX 260's not on the loop and I wouldn't want to see temps in the box rise much more. Although with this Thermaltake Armor case, there are fans galore. So would you try replacing the fans or a larger radiator or..?

Wow. I swapped out the 3 deltas for the three Yate Loons. This time I am pushing air through the radiator instead of pulling. Now my temps are 49-51C! Is that crazy? Granted, I did use the controllers to bring down the deltas as low as they would go but they still put of 2-3 times the Yate Loons. As I said, I am pushing air through this time and the air that I am drawing from is away from the immediate computer air which may be part of the deal but still. I have never seen a 49C on this computer. I was told push/pull makes no difference but in this case, it's huge. Now I get these Yate Loons which are absoultely silent and the lower temps to boot! Just goes to show that changing up the configuration can make a difference. What method works for one isn't necessarily the best for another.

Thought I might ask one other quick question. Now that I am using fans that only draw .30a instead of 1.5a, maybe I will put the 3 fans on the computer's PSU instead of a separate PSU. I bought a cheap one at Comp USA to just run the fans but was thinking about just extending a line from the computer out. Anyone have any idea how many fans I can safely put on one line?

You shouldn't ever need a seperate PSU for fans unless they are moster fans, more than you were using. So yea, dump that extra PSU. Ohh 10 or 12 maybe? I'd say 4 if you parallel them, the final wires carrying 4 fans current is kinda skinny. Not too worried about a 12 Molex wire from the PSU, it can carry 10+ amps easy at 12 volts, just the skinny fan wires.

I run a Q6600 on a single 120x1 rad. (Ok, its like the best rad $ can buy), but i use a single "Scythe S-FLEX 120mm Fan 1600rpm SFF21F", also in pull config.
Its got a fluid dynamic bearing and is attached to a controller. Mostly i run it at its slowest (~800rpm). Maybe if im gaming for ages i'll turn it up half way, then it still isnt anywhere close to 60c @ load. Even at full speed its more than quiet enough.

Ive wasted a lot of $ on fans before and since. They are all sitting in a box, these are the only fans i'll use.

Oh yeah, if u got a good psu (I use a 750w corsair, overkill i know but my load voltages dont drop so i can run barely over 1v 😀), you shouldnt need a seperate psu, its just a waste. Its like tools... when doing a job you dont use as many tools as possible, you use the single best tool for the job :)

My advice to you is to dump the water cooling altogether. Those idle temps are not very good at all.

Q6600 @ 3.2G (400 x 8) C1E enabled. Idle temps 36,36,34,34 - 37,37,35,35 ambient @ 73-74F (22.77C-23.33C), with a TR Ultra120Ex.

What did you measure those temps with? I notice you are only giving one temp. I have to assume that you are pulling temps from the mobo and they are wildly inaccurate, or you have a bigger problem than noisy fans.

Cmon Zorg, with respect, Water is always better than air its just fact, unless its a crappy kit with underrated parts. I feel like theres something wrong with the loop that just needs a simple fix, they are inaccurate readings OR those QXs are a lot hotter than we thought  jk

And OP: post full loop like conundrum said so we can see whats up

You would have to have some info on QX6700 to say those temps are out of line. Google "qx6700 temps". The temp with the stock fan is 65C and so overclocked at these temps, I am fine with that. Many report numbers in the 70's. Never been that high. I have used TAT but am currently using Core Temp and I gave one temp because they stay fairly close to one another. I'm no hardcore oc'r though. I never even tried to oc above the 3.20. It is plenty fast for me.

I agree that a good water setup is always better.

I also agree he has something wrong with the loop. I'm a little surprised in all the posts about the niftiest fan to use, no one said anything about the high idle temps.

We are talking idle temps here right, You and I both said IDLE temps here right. Because I don't believe that the QX6700 is running at 65C idle at 3.2G or even remotely possibly "in the 70s" idle, NO WAY. Please use Google for me and provide a credible link for your claim.

If that is indeed the case, then keep your water and dump the QX6700 for the Q6600.

Have you bothered to run Prime95 small FFTs? You should, you will probably get by with your water due to a smaller delta. Those people that you indicate are running idle in the 70'sC will be hitting prochot# in a couple minutes and thermtrip# shortly after.

These idle temps are actually higher than they used to be. Your temps are really high especially for water.

CPU only loop. Swiftech MCP655 to Apogee GT block AS5 on block. CPU block exhaust line leads out of computer to an externally mounted Thermochill 120.3. Leaving radiator line leads back through the back of computer and directly back into the pump. T-Line fill between pump and block and terminates at top of case with a danger den fill port.

Well, I not really debating the issue of temp. This chip is well known for running hot. Credible link? I just picked the first thread off of google form overclock.net and it's 3 pages of posts about the QX6700 temps. The very lowest temp on the 3 pages is 45C.

http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/140621-qx6700-temps.html

Thermal trip is said to be 80C for the QX6700 but there were posts of some that were already at 80C.

You obviously have much more experience in water cooling and I'm not here to debate information already known. I was really just trying to get info on fans which, thanks to some kind folks, I received. I'm actually quite happy with the cpu. Maybe after Nehalem is out awhile, I will upgrade. No hurry.

I see one reason already. The Apogee GT isn't suited to quads, especially that one. It just doesn't pull enough heat. For a duly it's just oky. It's an older design.

Fuzion V2 or GTZ and your temps will be better.

First of all, I have no personal experience with water. It's far too much trouble at the mild 3.2G that I run. It's also completely unnecessary in order to understand that you have a problem.

Your link is a poor link, but read it yourself, they are talking about 100% load temps Prime etc. not idle temps. I'm just telling you that if you are using water and your idle temps are 51C-53C you are doing something wrong, it's that simple. Either you have your Vcore set to something ridiculous or you have your water setup screwed but something is very wrong. Stop worrying about which fan you are using and fix your problem. I did try to ignore it and let you go on your merry way, but I couldn't.

You made me do it, so hear it is. First hit on Google.

Here's mine. Kentsfield QX6700@stock. Scythe Ninja+120mm 1600 RPM. Idle temperatures don't matter, but stress do. In my case 2xOrthos=60 celsius, while idle is 20C lower. Use coretemp to monitor your CPU's temperatures.

This is my Kentsfield at 3.2GHz - 68 celsius (2 x Orthos small fft's). I used Collaboratory liquid pro, which is much better than AS5. The temps seem normal.
Notice that these are LOAD temps and are on air and that his idle temps are ~20C lower. So by taking that point from his first post and subtracting it from his second post load number we get an idle of 68C- ~20 = ~48C idle at 3.2G with a QX6700 on air. He didn't post ambient, so who knows. At any rate your idle on water is ~51-53 and his on air is ~48. Do you see a problem here? If not, then proceed in blissful ignorance, but if you do, then fix it.

Here is another I found, note the 3.6G and the idle of 52C on air.

QX6700 OC?

Postby stunt on Sat May 05, 2007 8:59 pm
Update!! I have been able to push my QX6700 to 3.6GHz x8 multi @ 1800MHz fsb with temps idle 52c/load 70c. Im still on air cooling and having a fit trying to get temps max @ 65c under full load. Any suggestions?
