Plan to do little to no overclocking just want a smooth stable system for games like HL2E2(Source Engine) and maybe couple others at atleast 1024x768.

Don't care about DX10 or SLI but do plan to upgrade to 7900 card soon after

Would adding a good sound card really take stress of the cpu much(as in a noticable difference)?

any other suggestions
All parts are found on zip or newegg

Personally, i'd get a 7900gt from the start as these aren't much more expensive than a 7600gt, same goes for the Harddrive i think that 320gb are the cheapest per gig at the moment. And i agree with assman, even though 32bit WinXP doesn't get much of a speed boost going from 1gb to 2gb, i have read that 64bit Vista will.

maybe not xp 32bit itself but fear or oblivion(high end games) will perform much better with 2 gigs.

Suggestions:

1. Your PSU is overkill for the components you have. Switch to this: Antec NeoHE 500 ATX12V 500W and save some money. This still pumps up enough juice to power up whatever you throw at it.

2. Get 2 Gigs of Ram. I'd suggest this: Patriot 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM Unbuffered DDR2 667. Check for compatibility though.

I tried to find a 7900GT that will fit within the budget with the money saved on the PSU, but couldn't.

Good Luck with the build.

1.) Get smaller PSU, may be around 500W.

2.) Get E6300 and Overclock.

3.) Money saved from above get 7900gt.

4.) also get 2 gig ram.

Get a 7900GT, 320GB 16mb hdd, and 2gb of ram. If you plan on migrating to vista in the future 1gb is ok but most of it will be in use.

Thanks guys I'll certainly go with the 16mb cache HDD and try going down to the 6300 the 700w PSU is to be more prepared for upgrades and possible OC's

ok, i would agree with all of the above comments.

and add this.

to build such a nice machine, and base the whole thing on an ECS mobo... I have only always had trouble with ECS boards. I have 3 dead ones at home. I will never buy ECS again. Leave the 700w psu, take the 500watt, and use the extra money to get a reliable nice gigabyte board.

I find the mobo can cause lots of trouble, and make other components look like the culprits. and with RMA returns ,these guys dont test the boards by installing win etc, they check if it boots with cpu and ram, and then replaces or returns no fault found.

build your house on stone...

Ok going down to an ENERMAX Whisper II EG565P-VE FMA(24P) ATX12V 535W Power Supply 90V~135V or 90V~265V UL, cUL, TUV, CB - Retail 79bucks

As for the mobo It's real hard to find Core2 mobos right now that don't cost over 200-300, and that's out of my price range. I have'nt heard anything good about Gigabyte boards from friends unfortunately.
If I go E6300 and overclock what board/ram do guys suggest at a low price?
Reason I choose the ram is because it's what the board suggests

Alright Going up to a P5b on the mobo but now I need someone to suggest some ram that's compatible as I've heard different ddr2 boards are very picky about the ram. Any experiences here?

and thanks all of you

im using 2gb corsair xms2 ddr2 800 CL5 (very satisfied!!!)

or

CL4 ( a little more expensive)

gigabyte loves corsair....

i have 667 ddr2 running, the value cheap-ass stuff, as me board likes!!!

well, have you heard anything bad about a gigabyte board?
i've never done a RMA on a gigabyte board. really nice, full of features, oc'able...
i'll bet my left nut on gigabyte...

Sorry for bumping this old topic but how much performance would I gain from adding a good audio card? Would it be better than the onboard solution in the long run?

The performance gain would probably be minimal; with a good sound card you'd probably turn up all the sound effects as well. Anyways, the primary benefit of getting a sound card is improving sound quality. You can get an X-Fi for $70 after rebates, but it's up to you. Some people don't even notice the difference.

I'm using CL5 Corsair XMS2 DDR2-800 right now and I'm running it at CL4, but on NewEgg it seems like some people are having some trouble clocking it down. I guess it depends on your setup. Anyways, CL4 is pretty expensive right now...actually, all Corsair DDR2-800 RAM is pretty expensive, and prices are rising.

Finally, if you're getting that 7600GT, don't get a 7900GT later on. Wait for the DX10 cards to come out and get one of those, or get a 7900GT now. It's not worth it to upgrade from a 7600GT to a 7900GT.
