Hey guys I am looking to upgrade my computer and I have decided a good way to do that is going to a crossfire configuration. I current run a GIGABYTE GV-R787OC-2GD Radeon HD 7870. Now I am wondering if the second needs to be the exact same or just gigabyte or even just any old 7870. I found a good buy on a Diamond 7870 the A7870PE52G. Any help would be dearly appreciated as it will not only improve my computer but also save me quite a lot of money.

Thanks,
Matt

With crossfire, AMD makes it very lenient. As long as you have the same GPU architecture, you can crossfire. For example, you can crossfire a 7950 and a 7970. You can buy any 7870 to crossfire with your current one, but I would go with the same manufacturer just to be safe, and because it looks better in your computer.

You're in good hands. If you wanted to crossfire that thing with a 7730, you could. Would you want to? Heck no, as the other would just slow your 7870 down. Just pop in a 7870 for optimum performance. Brand most likely will have a negligible effect so no worries there. I would advise though that you ensure that both GPU's are running at similar clock speeds, and the two have equal amounts of RAM.

Other than that, you're good to go... Although, I do believe the 7870's require Crossfire cables, so don't forget that. (Certain cards don't, namely the 7750 as one example.)

(Truth be told... You could probably even cross fire a card from the 6xxx series, but again you wouldn't want to.)

Thank you very much for that!
