Need Faster Wifi Speeds

Okay , i live in ireland where we have insane internet speeds , my current plan is 240mbps down and 24 up , thing is , over ethernet i get full speed but over wifi i only get a MAX of 50 , never crossed it , my laptop has AC 3160 which is pretty good , i have a note 4 which also has a good wifi chip , i dont the problem is my devices. is it my router and if so what do i buy to get the max i could , my router is also a modem , so its connected to the wall and it gives out wifi , will i buy a new modem all together or just buy a router and connect it with ethernet.

if someone can link me to anything i need to buy that would be fantastic

What model modem do you have?

If you're near lots of other people, 50Mb/s is about all you can expect out of WiFi.

Are you using the 5Ghz network or 2.4Ghz? 2.4Ghz network has max speed of about 54mbps, 5Ghz will saturate 240mbps.

Are you using the 5Ghz network or 2.4Ghz? 2.4Ghz network has max speed of about 54mbps, 5Ghz will saturate 240mbps.

I'm on 2.4 i can try the 5ghz and let you know

That's completely incorrect. 802.11g was limited to a theoretical 54Mb/s. 802.11n can go to theoretical 450Mb/s on 2.4GHz with the right router and WiFi card, and I've seen at least 80Mb/s I think.

802.11ac can theoretically go into the gigabits, but cards that can handle this speed are rare. It's no faster than 11n when on 2.4GHz.

Says here that max potential speed is 100mbps, but realistically is only 50mbps.

802.11n AP will support 802.11g client hardware just fine, but letting 802.11n AP support 802.11g comes with a painful performance hit. While 802.11n devices working in the 2.4GHz band are backwards compatible with 802.11g, or even 802.11b, faster 802.11n equipment will lose about half its potential speed. So, instead of seeing say 100Mbps of throughput from 802.11n AP to the 802.11n laptops, you'll only see 50Mbps.

tried 5ghz , only 5 mbps better , im stuck at 55 now , its getting anooying , should i just get a new router ??

That's specifically talking about backwards compatibility with other devices in use.

I just did a speed test, with 5GHz disabled on the router. Both devices 2x2 MIMO, not 3x3:

That's limited by my internet connection - internal file transfers get ~16-18MB/s.

You haven't told us what model router you have.
