Need file off old hard drive

I just bought a USB 2.0 to SATA transfer cable. I need to get some files off a hard drive that stopped booting up in my previous computer. The computer, a Gateway, I'm using to retrieve the files is the exact same computer as the one the hard drive came out of. Also the hard drive I need the files off of is spinning up. With the cables connected as required I can see the drive under device manager as functioning properly but, when I go in to My computer I can't see the drive to explore it. Any Ideas? Also both these drives had Windows 8 on them.
