Need For Speed Underground 1

While I sit here at my desk waiting patiently for need for speed underground
2 to come out mid next month, I was wondering....

can anyone tell me how the hell does once get the "U" performance upgrades,
like level 4 upgrades, in NFS Underground 1?
You can see them in underground mode and I think its statistics. its show
level 1, 2, 3 & U

(I think) You need to have all level one upgrades on your car to get level 2
etc. The special upgrades are available when you win races and events. I
don't know if there is a rhyme or reason to when you get them, but special
items are unlocked throughout the game.

as you play the game you "unlock" more and more parts
depending on the tournament or time trial that you beat.
you can't get a "level 4" upgrade. the best you can get
is a level 3 with the added bonus of a custom part added
to the engine, transmission, turbo, etc. sometimes you
have to choose between them. i'm not sure if you can have
all of the custom parts on one car. if you have a custom
part equipped you have an advantage over any same level
part that anyone can equip.
