Here is my story, i have been trying to decide on the visiontek 280x, the EVGA 960 SSC, and the MSI r9 380 gaming. i google search 280x vs gtx 960, and, the 280x wins. BUT.. the 280x they use is $380, mine is $200. So, will the 280x still be better? and i dont know if the 380 is better than the 2 because the 280x would normaly win, but again, the 280x is the cheapest one you can get, so please help me decide. I know the 280x always wins, but will it still win since it is the cheapest one?

if you're playing at 1080p resolution you're still going to want to get a 4gb card. either the AMD or the nvidia are both good choices, but it REALLY would be worth your time to you invest in a 4gb card now rather than realize later that you needed 4gb. i mean you dont HAVE to but it'd be worth the extra few bucks because 2gb cards are kinda on their way out for 1080p gaming. lots of games use more than 2gb at higher settings these days. i know fallout 4 uses almost 3gb on ultra settings for me @ 1080p res.

Yes, it is still faster in games. I have the Sapphire Radeon Dual-X R9 280x and it plays everything on high settings around 50FPS or more...and that's with a slightly overclocked AND FX 6300. The newer R9 380 is a rebranded R9 285 with full Direct X 12, but still slower than the R9 280x.

benchmarks show me that the r9 380 is actually a tad faster than the r9 280x (hd 7970)...

The 280X is the fastest of the 3 you mention. The 380/285 and 960 are pretty much equal with the 960 tending to be a little faster. The 280X is probably cheaper because they are likely wanting to clear out stock for when the 380X comes out. I had seen reports of it coming out Sunday, but it's not available on Newegg.

Go for the 280X...assuming your PSU is quality enough to power it.

Also, when looking at benchmarks and prices, you have to look at the date. The 280X was much more expensive when released. Look at the 290X...it was $550 at launch, now it's what...$330

All quite close to each other. With those cards it starts coming down to specific titles and resolutions. R9-280X will do better with higher resolutions then the R9-380/R9-285 in general. So if you are doing 1920x1080 then the 380 is fine, if you intend 2560x1440 then the 280X will be better, though at that point you should really be looking at an R9-290/R9-390.

GTX960 2GB are typically slower then the R9-380 (about 10%), however, many of the GTX960 4GB on offer are highly overclocked at around the same price as the standard clock R9-380.

Here's a verified link to a gaming website on Youtube that shows the R9 280x faster in games than the R9 380. Also there's more sites that verify it's overall faster. Do some other research than picking just one site as there is much more evidence against your conclusion.

you've also only picked one source. "but there are lots others as well"

and what exactly is a "verified link"? are you referring to the bargain basement youtube video seemingly made by a child who included a bunch of graphs?

You can also see the issue in that video. Depending on the game or test you throw at those cards they can be very close to equal or show a huge difference.

Personally I would take something akin to the EVGA GTX960 4GB ACX 2.0 SSC and get the lower power consumption. Or stick with the R9-380 for its more recent design, which should come in handy in the future. R9-280X (aka 7970) is getting a bit long in the tooth.

amen. they are about the same speed +/- a few frames per second...and the 380 is actually newer architecture and supports newer features. only thing that makes the 380 a drag is if you get the 2gb model
