Hola Brain Trust -

I am putting together a 12 bay NAS for storing/streaming my ever-growing media library. I picked up a 12-bay rack mount chassis and am spec'ing out what I what to drop in there.

CPU and Mobo - I want something that is fairly low power, but needs to be beefy enough to do 3D 1080P transcoding, on the fly.

RAM - I'm figuring between 8GB - 16GB.

RAID - A 12 drive array limits my options. (I'll probably be running RAID5 with a Hot Spare, or RAID6). The only 2 cards I've turned up, so far are and Adaptec and an areca.

If anyone has experience with either of these controllers, or recommendations for other good options, I would really appreciate it.

Drives - Pretty simple here. Between 4TB-6TB SATA models, depending on cost.

Thanks for the help!

asus make a low cost ws 1150mb. yu culd then toss in a haswell based server cpu that 4 core and not to much more then a 4670k.
if your looking for lower power then haswell if you can wait in a few months is brodwell cpu.
haswell right now runs at 80-84)w.

Thanks smorizo. Good info.

Quick question... It looks like your answer marked the thread closed/complete. Not sure how to change that. I'd still like some feedback on RAID cards. Any ideas?

Thx again.
