Need HDD guru

Hello, I need 1TB HDD's for the DVR's I import-4&8ch recording. What specs would you recommend? Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB SATA3 7200rpm 64MB Hard Drive (WD10EARS) or is 32MB ok? Is seagate a better product? Speed is obviously a factor when dealing with 200-400 fps recording at the same time as playback. Is there anything I should be looking for specifically? Thanks.

The "green" series of hard drives are aimed at lower power useage, and as such are often a little slower than other HDD's

You might want to check the specifications for the WD10EARS because as I remember, it is a 5400rpm drive, not 7200rpm.
Western Digital drives are very reliable, I've had heaps over the years (and continue to only buy WD =D) and none have failed.
But most people recommend the Samsung Spinpoint F3 103SJ which is a cheap but reliable and fast HDD. So you might want to take a look at that if it is offered.

Check with the DVR manufacturer. They often, if not always, are designed to be used a certain way, from components on the boards to the speed of the HDD. If you use a HDD that's not compatible the DVR's are going to run into problems.

Thanks for your reply. I have also been offered Seagate 1TB Barracuda 7200.12 SATA3 [HDDSE2103] for the same price, but they are 32MB cache not 64MB as with the WD. Which would you go for?

You were right they were advertised as 7200 RPM but the specs are 5400RPM, thanks for pointing it out, I thought I checked it on a spec sheet. Thanks again.

If you have some time to kill I would get 1 of each. Put some cameras on the DVR's and let them run on high settings for a few days.
We use Seagate and Hitachi drives. I do not know if the DVR will react violently with the different cache, I don't suspect it will matter but those engineers are crazy lol.

I have not had any personal experience with 64MB cache drives from WD but I've always had a good experience with WD in PC's.

Also you need to take into consideration returns. How easy is will it be to return defective Seagate/Western Digital drives?

Yea I think i will go with the seagate. It probably has a better name so I can't lose. The return is only to the supplier, !5min drive so its not a big deal. Thanks.

product at all.

Even if you consider their odd
"warranty period" (the 1-2-3 year or
whatever starts they day the drive
is MANUFACTURED, NOT the day you buy

bit of other quality control
problems that swore me off of them
forever. Google "seagate stiction"
as an example.

told me, "The date code shows
