My brother bought a pre-built pc which run a gt 640 fine for 4 years and never have a problem
but recently he want to buy a new graphic card.So i think gtx 750 ti is a good option to go with but im a bit worry about PSU as didnt have a voltage as recommended for 750ti

So if i replace a gt 640 with 750ti in a pc that run gt 640 fine will it have any problem regarding psu wattage ? I did a reading somewhere that 750 ti is suppose to consume even less power than gt 640 is it true ? and i think he wont be overclocking anyways, but if he decided to overclock will it still be enough ?

Thank you so much.

EDIT : A zotac gtx 750 TI card

well theres some 750 ti cards that require a 6 or 8 pin pcie lead from the psu and there some that only need slot power ?

pcie slot = 75w 6 pin =75w 8 pin = 150w power supplied to the card also like here you can see the power draw in the specs

Thermal and Power Specs
http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-750-ti/specifications

so this 750 ti needs 60 w so it may not require a power lead from the psu and just run off slot power

and as this as well [no pcie psu lead] 60w card

this 750 ti nees more then the 75w from the slot '' Total Power Draw : 85 Watts '' so that extra pcie lead [6pin] from the psu is required to supply the extra 25w needed

GTX750TI without power connector are very common and should run off of the PCIe slot. Check the owners manual though. I've ssen some HP SFF computers with 30W limit in the GPU slot. Mostly it just works. Check for EUFI or Legacy BIOS compatibility. Video cards and Computers come either way, and must match. The GT 640 might actually use more power than the 750. They're very eficient.

''Lenovo'' tough call on them and doing any ''upgrading ''

good luck wish I could tell you better but cant and cant recommend any card on them

there own folks can give a solid answer to that

or the end result as here

''Hello, i got the Nvidia gt 620 2gb as suggested.. and yet i still do not get a display when turning my computer on.. and when you force your computer off by holding the button down instead it just instantly turns off when the gpu is in?

really ?? it all there proprietary bios's and aftermarket cards just may not work at all period. but hay its your money
you buy , you try, and hope it don't make you cry , all I can do is point this out and warn you before you buy and save you some grief

'Lenovo is not upgrade friendly at all

good luck

The pc comes with on-board GPU and then install the gt 640 later, and didnt pose any problem. So im gonna tell my brother that he better ask about returning policy before making a purchase haha

Again, thank you for taking your time answering.

that gt 640 is a low power oem type card and that could be a safer bet to work out maybe a 25-40w card

prebuilts are not so ''open'' like I was saying from that thread I linked it all your own risk

i'll post my disclaimer once more

some models of store bought computers [dell.hp,acer,ect..] may come with a ''locked or fixed'' bios and may not allow you to change certain hardware as a video card.. this is done to protect them from undue warranty claims and refunds .this is not done to hurt you but to protect them. you really need to see if that upgrade has been proven to work in your model first before you invest money in it .. there are a lot of these threads here at toms to look at some models will allow upgrades and some dont.. and a lot of guys here say ya ya ya when is really no no no...it would be sad you spent $200 on a card that wount post after you installed it as most find out. then get told its your psu and you spend more and end up right back where you are now, but its up to you good luck..

you got to know the the boards in these computers are not like the ones we use to do custom builds witch are open to upgrading with in the boards compatibly . the bios is custom made for there design and just for the parts they authorize to be used on there computers there only guaranteed to work as is out of the box as you bought it ,..

also these boards do not have to meet atx standards and there pci-e slot power may not do the required 75w needed for most higher end cards and can be limited to say 45 or 60w that is all thats needed with the low end factory oem cards that it may of shipped with

the rest is all on you so if it works out fine great if not oh well you were told I would not spend / risk good money on it for sure

''better ask about returning policy before making a purchase haha''

not a joke but a good fact to follow
