Need help badly with errors

So I went the lazy route and rather than go for a clean install this time around, I decided to try the Upgrade and keep all programs/settings. After two failed upgrades that hung at 97%, I finally got Win8 installed. For the first couple hours everything ran fine. I uninstalled a bunch of old unnecessary programs, ran cccleaner, defraggler, updated my drivers, etc. I then installed a couple updates that needed to restart my PC. This is where the problems started.

1.) Every time I boot my PC It goes from the boot logo, to a black screen where my backlight shuts off on my monitor and it hangs there for a few minutes before booting.
2.) On shutdown it goes to a black screen with my cursor and hangs there for a very long time, then on the next startup says it didn't shut down properly.
3.) Playing any of my games for more than 5 minutes causes Win8 to crash and reboot.

I have run sfc and got no errors, Ive tried running chkdsk 2x and I get stuck at 27%. I ran a couple programs to check for errors in my HDD and have found none.
I went from Win7 64-bit Ultimate to Win8 Pro 64-bit. Both OS were legitimately purchased.
CPU: AMD Athlon II x4 645
Graphics: GTX 560 (OC)
RAM: 6GB DDR3 @ 1333MHz

so my specs are definitely good enough

Has anyone else encountered these issues, and if so, does anyone know any fixes?

At this point, it sounds like the upgrade got so badly cratered that it will prolly never run right.
If all you have is the upgrade then reinstall win7 then try a clean win8 upgrade again.

Upgrades are always iffy, and when you also change to a new version, perhaps more so.

I might have bypassed windows 8, but that is water under the dam.

You could try using system restore to get you back to a date when things did work.
But, I would worry that there are some unfixable things lurking.

I think I would try to do a clean install.

Use windows easy transfer to export your user settings and files.
After the clean install, you can import all of some of them.
Apps will need to be reinstalled.

Do you have a SSD? If not, seriously consider buying one.
a 120gb ssd will hold the os and a handful of apps. With 180gb or 240gb, you might not ever need a separate hard drive.

Your windows 8 upgrade dvd should be capable of a clean install.
Boot from it and you should be able to reformat your hard drive and install.

If you buy a SSD, leave the old hard drive disconnected, otherwise windows will get confused.
Later, you can reconnect it and reactivate.

-Sounded like a storage issue to me.

-I would guess write failures to the HDD are not being reported to the OS in a timely manner. Most likely because lazy writes are selected for this drive.

-Turn off lazy writes to the drive and see if you start getting a bunch of disk errors reported in your eventlog.

don't ignore the problem.

Thanks everyone for the help, as it turns out the issue was actually to do with the fact that I hadnt updated my Antivirus. Kind of strange but it fixed all my problems.
