Hi,

I am wondering what i should do. I am in college with a major in accountancy so i don't use any programs heavy on CPU usage (mostly excel, word...). I mostly play these games: WoW, League of legends, Gta v, Far cry 4 and Overwatch. Although i am probably going to be getting more games with this new rig...
I want to be able to play games on high (or better) with a stable 60FPS 1080p, I don't care about 4k or VR.

I wanted to know which one of these builds would be a better overall performance for gaming/work:

i3 6100, 8gb DDR4 2133mhz, GTX 960 2gb w/ 256 m.2 PCi SSD (boot) + 1tb 7200RPM
or
i5 6400, 8gb DDR4 2133mhz, GTX 950 2gb w/ 1tb 7200RPM

PS: For now i can only one get these two builds so don't bother telling me to get for example a "K" processor or a GTX 970(+) since it is really out of my budget. I Might upgrade later on but as of now this is the best i can do :)

Solution

Nope, both are perfectly suitable for normal tasks. The i5 might be able to, like, handle 45 excel sheets on the same document or something, but when comparing i3 to i5, you just have to ask yourself what programs /need/ the increase in power you get with the i5

What about normals tasks? (Working, watching videos...)
Would the i5 be better in that regard or will the i3 perform the same (will the difference be noticeable?)

Oh OK gotcha!, and I was wondering if it is possible to overclock a i3 6100? i know it is not part of the "K" series so technically it shouldn't be overclockable, but I've seen a couple of people manage to overclock it to 4.0GhZ. Do i need a specific motherboard for that?
I am also using a liquid cooler from an old PC so the temperature shouldn't be an issue if overclocked (?).

Thanks for the quick replies btw bud, i really appreciate it!

not a problem mate, it's better than actually working haha.

I don't know that the i3 6100 is overclockable, so I would definitely take that over to the overclocking section on the forums.
