They allow you to custom spec the laptop you want based on a range of standard laptop bases. There are limitations on what configs are available with what chassis however you can usually get what you want and price wise they work out very competitive for the specs vs a high performance gaming machine from one of the bigger brands.
Edit: Spec wise, depends on what games and settings you want to play at but a good starting point for most modern games would be an i7 9750H cpu, 16gb DDR4 ram (make sure dual channel) and a GTX 1660 series gpu.
Storage wise most of the configs default to a sata SSD, I would remove that and change it to a Samsung NVME drive for better performance (cost difference isn't too much).
