Need help choosing a cpu!

Recently, I have found myself doing a lot of video editing and rendering, for my visual arts classes. Currently, I am using a 2 year old desktop that has an r9 290, 16gb ddr3, and an i5 4690(non K). The has performed extremely well for games over the past 2 years, but it seems to struggle when it comes to video rendering. After doing some research and talking to some people, I have decided that it would be worth to upgrade from the i5. The two processors that I am looking at are the intel xeon e3 1231 v3 and the intel i7 4790k. For my needs (heavy gaming and video editing), would the xeon be enough or should I go with the $70 more expensive i7.

Also, will the xeon perform as well as my old i5 in games?

i would get the i7 and overclock it that will be the best performance you can get and should be worth the extra

I would recommend if the pocket can afford it , like the other poster an I7

For such work if it is the main use for your system.

It`s all down to how much, and what you do the most with your system really Justin.
If rendering is what you do quiet a lot then you would benefit from upgrading to an I7.

Plus it would not hurt, as it may give you a few more frames per seconds in a game if the game is a heavy hitter on the cpu as much as the graphics card.

The Xeon you mentioned is essentially the same as the locked i7 4770 in terms of processing power. The unlocked i7 4790K is faster and can be overclocked to about 4.6 Ghz for a bit more speed for what you want to do. do you make money from this rendering, and is 20% faster worth $70? (Plus the cost of an aftermarket CPU cooler so you can use the full potential of the CPU)

Well, just remember this OP. The Xeon is a processor made by Intel for server things. This means no overclocking, which may be a problem if you ever want to quickly boost your FPS in games. It also has ECC memory support, which is totally useless for your purposes. However, you said old games, so it looks like it really won't matter. However, overclocking can be useful for easily making your videos render faster. So it really depends what you want. The 4790k will be just under 100 dollars more, so it's your move, and even if you don't want to overclock it, it comes .6 GHz faster at base
